Can anyone tell me the signs of swimbladder? I know its a random question but need to know for my goldie he perked up last night after spending a few days on the bottom of the tank now he is swimming around the top of the tank and when he swims to the bottom when he stops swimming he floats back to the top!!
he has gone from one extreme to the other!!!
Are there any cures for swimbladder??

Swimbladder is when the fish cant control how it swims
You will notice that he is either a bottom sitter or a floater. Bottom sitting fish just waddle along the substrate and when they try to swim, sink back down again. This is due to the air bladder not able to fill with air for some reason.
When they float its because they cant get rid of air so they roll about on the surface and cant swim down without floating back up again.

Another reason for all this is too much gas in the intestines. The commonest cause is flake food because in coldwater it takes longer for the food to go through the intestine and gives off more gas than usual making the fish floaty. To cure that, dont feed flake food again. Fast the fish for 3 days and then feed it boiled squashed peas for another 3 days and then see if that helps at all. Raising the temperature to 18-20c will help food go through the body quicker.

If that doesnt work then it could be the bladder has been damaged in some way, and something like a tumour is growing pushing it out of shape. Bacterial or viral infections can affect the swim bladder and feeding medicated food may help that.

Switch to a food where the fish doesnt have to reach out the water to get it and dont feed flake unless the tank is warmer and the flake has been soaked first.
You can get sinking granular food for goldies.

have started fasting already feel sorry for my other goldie tho!!!!
will try feeding him peas again first time i tried them he didn't like them and spat it out the other goldie loves them!!!
would he be better with some live food occasionally when i feed them flakes he doesn't eat them of the top he waits for them to drop down to the bottom and eats it off the plants and rocks.
will get some sinking food and medicated pellets just in case and will put the heater in to crank the heat up to 20c!!! :good: :good:
thought keeping a fish would of been easy its a really complicated buisness and occupies most of my time and now money!!!!!!!!!

Yes people seem to think that a goldie is an easy pet to keep.
for the most part they are but mass breeding from poor parent stock has now made them more prone to infections and internal organs are more and more squashed with the shape of the fish.

I dont keep any of my goldies in tanks. I have a pond where my two sarasa are over wintering and a pool in the garage for my 5 fantail crosses.

really worried about him have moved him to the quaritine tank but he is just lying on his side on the bottom of the tank. he moves occasionally but mostly just lying o his side looking miserable. think it would be fairer to put him out of misery but does anyone know how to do this without causing him any more suffering.
I know he is suffering at the moment and dont feel i can put him through it anymore i wouldn't like to be left to die slowly.not fed him for nearly two days now and he seems to be getting worse not better. he is in medicated water which isn't helpiung either its not fair on the poor little guy to put him through this. :-( :-(
