This morning I checked on my pregnant platy and she seemed to be doing well - acting normal, etc. However, when I got home from school I was like AHH! she was really skinny. AAAAndddd..... stupid other fish were all immensly chubby (and I hadn't fed them yet that day). My female cherry barb and male platy looked pregnant themselves. Grr... Anyways, I don't know if my platy aborted and they were eaten (or just sucked up filter - I never did find any evidence of fry, dead or alive), or if she had them and they were eaten. I've never had livebearers before, so she might have been ready to drop, but to me it didn't look like it - she wasn't quite "square" and didn't look "ready to pop". I'm guessing she aborted since she's pretty new to my tank and was fairly preg when I got her. Still, I'm sad - I was kinda looking forward to platy babies! Oh well, I'm certain I'll get more, having 2 females in there with such a good looking boy. ;) I just hope the babies from next time don't get eaten, if that's the case! "Hungry Hungry Hippos" my foot, these are Hungry Hungry Fishies!

if she aborted then there would be white stuff on the floor but i think she gave
birth and the fry got eaten now kwikly mark the date she gave birth on and then
you will know when her nex fry will arrive 1 month and put her in another aquarium 5 days before that. and soon you will have loads of fry!

i doubt they all got eaten check the filter and gravel

The fry can hide incredibly well. They're also VERY tiny and pretty much clear, so they're very hard to see. You just *might* have some hiding in your tank somewhere :)

I was told by a fellow fish person that oftentimes the change in water/pH/etc when you get new fish can cause the Platys to give birth. That's apparently what happened with mine.

This is exactly what happened to my pregnant platy after I brought her home - she was very fat but definitely not fit to burst, and then she just went reeeally skinny. I never saw any babies or any sign she'd aborted but I'm assuming it was the latter. But I will keep my fingers crossed that it's not the case with you and you have some really tiny youngsters swimming around somewhere!
