:( I have isolated - in a breeder tank - a sick swordtail. She was being bullied by an algae eater and had damaged fin, also very thin and listless. I have now noticed her gills are quite red and so have become more worried. Jamnoq has been helping and suggested I post this here - could this be nitrates? Her fin appears to be healing today and it does not look like finrot - but I'm new to this. Any suggestions? cool_jool

good idea isolating her from the algea eater, my flying fox did nothing but cause me grief... maybe now she is on her own its just a case of tlc , without the stress she may well recover. try her with some fresh bloodworm they seem to like that good luck hope she gets better pebbles. :)

What are the readings...ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH?
Tank size, other tankmates?

:)Thanks for the reply. Levels are fine. Tanks mates are 3 barbs, 3 neons, 5 pristellas, and another swordtail, plus the bullying algae eater. She looks much better today. Gills looks same colour as other swordtail now and fin has healed half the way up, tail is also much stiffer. How long should I keep her isolated? cool_jool

I would keep her isolated for about a week to make sure that nothing else in the tank shows signs of sickness and to make sure she is fully healed. if she is not healed all of the way and the other fish get sick too it will be that much harder for her to make a full recovery.
