Hi I wish my first post was under better circumstances.

My tank is 80l and has been going for 3 weeks with a pair of swordtails (1 male + 1 female). Prior to the fish going in I had the system up and running with a couple of plants for over a week.

Yesterday morning I could see nothing wrong with either nor could my daughter (that I am setting the tank up for). 24 hours later the male has a lot of white threads for a better word that are mainly seen from the head on, they are about 1mm long. He has developed a red area behind the eyes and very close (almost continous) red dots along his central line. He has his dorsal fin down and seems very lethargic for long periods then starts darting up and down the tank for a while then stops just below the surface again. All of these symptoms have started within 24 hours hilst I was away over night. He has also very suddenly lost wieght.

I have spet a couple of hours scouring the net but cannot find a direct match for his symptoms. He has not been flashing nor showing any symptoms before and I cannot find a direct match in the books I have. I have tested teh water and all tests pH nitrate nitrite ect have all come in OK with no abnormally high results.

Once again I am sorry for this being my first post but I care for my daughters fish and I am not the sort of person to get any for of family pet without doing a bit of research into them first. The amout of animal (of any kind) owners that do not find out all they can appalls me, and to be honest I am stumped.

Thanks Da Oz I have gotten some Protozin (recomended by local vet) and have started treatment.

I am supprised at the speed the infestation came on, as I always check thier condition when I feed them ( alternating flakes and frozen live as recomended by LFS).

Fingers crossed.

I'd say that you do not have a problem with ich, but another parasite. The meds you have sould work for it though.
