Sick Siamese Fighter

Dear all,

I noticed that my Siamese Fighter was looking very ill this morning. Half of its body has gone a very pale colour and it looks like the top fin is starting to rot. She is looking very sorry for herself at the moment.

Does anyone know what it is. I introduced some cardinal tetras to the tank about week and a half ago, I think i have lost two of them out of the ten i bought but all the other fish look ok at the moment.

Need more info on size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia,nitrite,nitrate,and ph.
Being pale is a sign of stress does she have clamped fins as well.
How much of the fin has rotted away, and is there any red streaking in the fin.

If my calcs are right the tank should be about 90 litres, i have ten other tetras, one angel, One clown loach and two small catfish. I would be surprised if it is stress and she has been in the tank for ages and the only new change recently would be the introduction of the ten tetra but i have never seen them bother her.
I would say at the moment only a small amount of the fin appears to have suffered from rotting but she is acting very sluggish and at the bottom of the tank, she has always been a slow mover been this unusual for this fish to be so still for so long.

Well the angel needs a 30gal tank.
Clown loaches have to be kept in groups to be happy and need large tanks of 90 gallons.
I would check your stats first to rule it out.
Finrot can be a secondary infection, is she laying to oneside and does she look bloated.

she doesn't look bloated or lying on her side

I would take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
I would recommend a water change for now.

the neons have probably nipped her, you really shouldnt keep bettas with those fish, females should be kept in groups of at least 5 ideally. you can add melafix but at half the dose, never use the full dose for bettas

If you haven't isolated her yet, isolate her. I would also recommend treating for gram positive and gram negative bacterial infections (Maracyn and Maracyn-Two are not very strong, but they are worth a try, since they might be strong enough for this).

ok thanks for that, she died some time ago now but are still losing some fish, i lost two small ones today and another one yesterday. Am keeping an eye on the others for any sickness.

I just find it quite odd, i have had a very healthy tank for over a year without any infections at all then suddenly i start to lose them. As i said earlier the beta was a drak purple colour then half the body went white or a very pale colour. Then i noticed it on a tetra, from what i have read on Fin rot i don't think it is that.

I have just seen this i think it may be my problem, all this trouble for me started when i added some Cardinal Tetra's into my tank,

has anyone got any more info on this disease, can it pass to another species.

Neon Tetra Disease
Neon Disease is caused by a parasitic single called organism called Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. The cell, releases millions of spores in to the water during reproduction. The spores are consumed with food by the fish where they then enter the intestine. The spores grow and replace the muscle fibers weakening the fish. If an infected fish becomes wounded or dies, the spores can escape and infect a new host.
Symptoms: Pale white patches appear under the skin beneath the dorsal fin. The fish also becomes emaciated and may swim erratically.[/b]
Treatment: Commercial remedies are usually ineffective as by the time diagnosis is confirmed the fish is too weak to be saved.

Cardinal tetras are not meant to get ntd there meant to be immune from it.
Has there red gone looking bleached out or fluffy, any black marking around the tail, or lumps on the belly that go to a point.

Not all the red has gone and I would not say there are any lumps of anything, but i do have normal tetras in there as well.

Would like to take a look at water stats as bad water quyality can make them pale, first thing you have to rule out.
