Frank my fantastic 5 year old Shubunkin is not happy
He is sitting on the bottom of the tank alot and only seems active for short times during the day and evening.
A couple of weeks ago we noticed a build up of waste which seemed to be red in colour and almost have a mouldy-like covering to it. We have been keeping a close eye on this and it is starting to happen again...We have stuck to simple flake food and monitoring water quality but don't know what else to do - any suggestions??
Thanks
i think his diet may be causing the slimey poo. Being fed flake all the time wont be good for him and the colour of his poo is reflected in what he eats. give him some boiled frozn peas that have been shelled and squashed for a day or two and see if this helps his digestion. also feeding lightly boiled lettuce, sweetcorn and a little orange may help too. live foods are also good and they love bloodworm but only give twice a week as a treat.
how big is he? a five year old should be fully grown and be around a foot long. At that size he will need a very large tank with 10x filtration. hope some of this helps.
Thanks for the advice - we took him off the bloodworm as we had our suspicions that may have been the cause!
He is only a small fish so nowhere near a foot long. We are moving house soon and we have promised him a brand new tank and all accessories so perhaps he can fulfil his potential then
In the meantime we appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for the welcome to the site.
