Hi my male Platy has been sick since Saturday. He was either lying on the bottom or gasping for air at the top. I placed him in separate container at the top of the tank. Have given bacterial medication every day since and yesterday tried a pea. He’s still no better. Just laying In the container. All my other fish are ok which Include 3 other platys. Neón Tetra and harlequins. Is it old age ? He was my first fish and was fully grown when I got him 9 months ago.

Do a huge water change ASAP.
Have you tested your water?
What are your water ph and dh?
Have you recently added anything new to tank? Chemicals? Fish? Plants? Snails? Shrimps? Wood? Rocks? Ornaments? Medicines?

I did a water change before I started the medicine as I had to remove the carbon filter. No new fish. Everything just the same. Can you do water testing when you are adding medicine ? Thanks for replying

Yes, you can test for anything. The main ones are ammonia and nitrite as these can kill fish. pH is useful and GH to make sure the water is hard or soft enough for the fish in a tank. You can find your GH by looking on your water company's website - if they give it, you need a number and the unit of measurement (there are several they could use), though 3 companies don't give it so with these you need the words they use.

Is there anyhting else in the filter besides carbon? Sponge, ceramic noodles, anything like that?

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately my Platy died. But I will do a water test now to check the levels and tomorrow I put the carbon filter back.
