OK...as many of you are aware, I put a female platy into quarantine to help with the healing of her damaged tail fin...she is doing great....tail growing back and she is acting normal.
Two days ago I put a male platy in with her.....he is her mate (so to speak)...prior to putting him in there I noticed his belly was slightly larger than usual...but I thought being platies it may have been too much food (as he was acting normal trying to chase everything else in the tank).
Yesterday I noticed the male platys belly had gotten slightly larger....but he was still acting normal. Eating, chasing the recovering female. THIS MORNING however, I notice that he is sitting on the bottom of the tank.....upright. but occasionally he looks like he is rolling to one side....then the other....his belly is looking like a pregnant female now (if he weren't a male I would say he is about to have fry
).
When he swims he seems to be struggling quite a bit and tends to want to go down the bottom of the tank...where to "recovering" female platy wants to chase him (for a change)....
while his belly is enlarged I don't believe it is dropsy as I have had platies with dropsy before (due to my stupid newbie mistake) and it looks nothing like it. He has no other markings on his body....
Tank Stats
Where he was : Ammo=0, Nitrite=0, Nitrate=10ppm
Where he is : Ammo=0, Nitrite=0, Nitrate=10ppm (identical)
EDIT: pH in both tanks is 7.4
In the tank ATM I have aquarium salt and fungus meds (to prevent infection in the female)...the filter is cycled and the water temperatures in both tanks are the same.
Any ideas would be most welcome!!
