I have a 4yr old ctenopoma that I've had for 3.5 years in a 36gallon tank and he only has 1 other fish (a discus) living with him. I've had my water tested when he got sick but the parameters are all normal. The heat and aeroation are the same. At one point he was acting interested in his favorite food but would take it in and spit it out. In general he gets a variety of foods made for fish. I tried to offer him blanched peas in case he was constipated but now he's just not interested in anything. He's at the point of just sitting in the corner and just watching me. I've since moved him to my hospital tank as the discus started picking at him. The only thing I've noticed is on occasion will breathe faster and then go up for a gulp of air. Mostly though just sits at the bottom. I don't notice anything externally except for a couple of missing scales up on his head that had been that way for a year. Could he have swallowed a larger stone ? I've seen him take them in when he finds food at the bottom in the past but he just spits them out. Any suggestions as to what the sudden sickness could be? The only other thing I can throw out there that might contribute is that approximately 1-2 days before showing these symptoms he ate a larger than usual amount of food which consisted of shrimp pellets and tropical pellets. I hope to have a fish vet come out if it's possible but that won't be for a couple of days. By then it may be too late. The missing scales are above his right eye. Can you see it in my attachments?

What are your water parameters? (pH, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite?)

Gasping is usually caused by high ammonia readings. Do you have a test kit?

I can not see your attachment... will you please try to upload it again?

(Discus and danios don’t go along with each other that well, especially because the Danio isn’t in a school. They should be kept in groups of 6 or more)
