My Pearl Gourami has developed a flaky-looking white-ish patch on his back. It is spreading very slowly. It definately does not look like ich. Any ideas of what it could be?

Might be Acidosis. I would check your pH and see if it's dropped below 6. One cause of a pH crash is high nitrates so if you can, test for nitrates also. A couple symptoms of this is producing excessive mucus, brownish gills and lethargy.

I would try a bit of Melafix in the tank. I use this for numerous things and it works wonders.

Thanks, I will try the Melafix! pH is 7.2. He is eating a lot and is very active in the tank. In fact, he is much more agressive then I had expected (he nips at the fins of the other fish). From all the research I have done about Pearl Gouramis I was expecting a much more docile fish. :S

i don't think golden apple snails multiply quite so fast

(although mine have just multiplied, and i didn't find the eggs so they hatched and now i have little baby snails wandering my tank, although the most i have seen at one time is 5, there could be so many more!! and they look like little tiny blobs of blue tack!! aww   )

Well, I having been using the Melafix but I think he is getting worse. He is starting to look a little pale. He is still eating and swimming around like always. All of the other fish seem OK. I don't know whats going on. Ammonia and Nitrate are both 0. Temperature is steady at 78. pH is 7.2. -_-
