My black moore has a thin white covering all over him, and two of my goldfish have blood in their fins. This tank is really piss ing me off because my danios are dropping like flies and I've just not had a lot of luck keeping goldfish in tanks, think I need to stick to tropical. So what should I treat it with? I'm going to have to treat the whole tank though.

Have you tested the water lately for the usual tests? What is the ph of the water?
Slime coat thickening is a reaction to an irritant, whether parasitic or the water isnt right.
The red in the veins could be septicemia, do you have your hands in the water a fair bit? How often do you do water changes, how much do you change and gravel vacs. How many fish and size of tank too.

hi megthefish, dont know if this is relevant to you but my comet once had a red vein like streak in its fin & its tail.i searched the internet & found an article saying that it was due to too much amonia in the water & it told me to do a 50% water change.i did this & within a day it had started to fade.the fish is fine now!how often do you do water changes? :) x

its sounds as if u need anti fin rot for the sick goldfish and did u make sure everything was clean before you put it in the tank ????

hope this helps

It a 50-60 gallon tank. A millenium 3000 filter, no heater. 4 fantail goldfish, 1 pearscale goldfish, 1 commet, and one black moore. 8 or so danios, 1 WCMM, 3 bronze cories and one wheather loach. I do water changes every 2-3 weeks (maybe 30% with gravel vac), which I know is HORRIBLE as this is a goldfish tank, would like to point out though that all the goldfish are small at the moment. Nitrate always stays below 40 pmm, not too sure of nitrite or ammonia, ph was 7.6 last time I checked (which was a few years ago...)
The tank has been running for 1 1/2 years. I'm getting a larger gravel vac soon so it will make water changes easier (faster) and I'll do them more often. The thing is the last few water changes I've had atleast one or two danios after the water change.

The goldfish at work are having the same problem, a bunch of them have bloody fins, and my pearscale (which was just added) was with those fish
:/
My black moore looks horrible, he's covered in this white slime/fungus stuff. So besides doing a water change (and doing them more often), what else should I do? Because at the moment I doubt doing just a water change is going to save them, they need some kind of med, I just don't know what kind.

And I only have my hands in the water when I do a water change or have to move something around or when a fish dies...

befour you started the tank did you put de clorinator in to make tap water safe for fish.
the stuff coming off the goldfish could be its slime coat this is coming off because
it is not happy or it is not kept in good condition.
i recomend you take a short trip down to your local aquatist and explain the synmptons.
mabee they can help you out.
btw dont get so frustrated over your danios dying.
weve all been there.
just take it easy and feed once a day for now.
how bog is your tank?
how many fish do you have in there?
it could be over crouded.
best of luck.

black molly3
by the way im going through a bit of a disaster at the moment aswell. I
wonder if you could help me.
go on the topic Help! a cat has biten my goldfish and its dying,iv put it in a tank but...
to find out more.

Meg we need to rule out water quality issues first or adding meds will just cover the problem up. If you dont have all the tests then take a sample to a pet shop and ask them to check it for you. Get them to write down the values for you so you can post back.

You need to get more water changes done in the meantime to get the water as good as you can before adding anything else.

When at the store get some aquarium salt which will help you out just now.

Are any of the fish scratching themselves or jumping around in the water?

Yes, I used declorinator.
I know more about fish then any of the people working at my lfs (where I work) so that would be pointless. Thats why I use this forum :D
I've always been feeding once a day...
I already stated how big it was
I already stated what fish I have in there
I already stated its overstocked.
Maybe you should read my post above yours?

Black_Angel, they close in one hour and are not open on Sundays, so I can't go get it tested, but I do know that my ammonia and nitrite are high, I haven't done a water change in awhile and my tank is overstocked so the levels are going to be high, its just common sense.
So everybody has told me that its due to water quality, so if I do water changes they should all magicly get better? They look pretty bad, I just don't believe that a simple water change is going to help them at the moment, thats why I'm looking to use a med.
I do have salt, but I have cories

Sorry I'm being so snippy but I just don't really need this right now, I'm having to deal with a dying bird and this so I'm just really frusterated...

No one is saying a water change will magically make your fish better, they are saying that you should change it in case it is the water quality. If you dont get your water tested then we can only guess what is wrong with the fish, so someone telling you what kind of meds to use isn't going to help.

try the interpet treatment range they have akways been reliable for me and maybe a bit high in price but trust me u r getting what u want

Meg I know how frustrating it must be for you just now but your fish need help as well and pouring in a med wont help at all. Do 50% water changes every day for a week and you will notice the difference.

R U ok Meg you sound stressed. hope your fish is ok..I am sure you are doing the best for him and the bird..dont be too hard on yourself. lol liz x

meg dont get stressed over this thts wat only makes it worse just take it easy

Hello,
Can you take the corrys and the loach out of the tank for a time? If you can put a heater in your tank and raise the temp by 5 degrees, alos put in your salt at 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gals. This may help. Its all I ever do when I have a problem and it has always worked. (exept for one time I put in a brand new heater then walked away for a while and got the water way to hot! ) I hope it works. Good luck!
