Hi

Came back from a few days away to find my fish all fine... until I looked closer and saw that my smallest platy (about 3cm long) had a small white/ grey area on the left fin/gill/mouth area. Altough feeding and swimming fine her scales are slightly raised as well.

After the initial panic, I hot-stepped it to the lfs and bought some fungus/ fin-rot treatment, which I diluted and added to the tank as instructed. So I guess it's fingers crossed time.

My tank details are below and queries are as follows:

Tank - 125l UK Juwel - 6 wks in existence
Fish - 3 platys (added after 2 wks), 2 Guppies (added after 3 wks)
Levels - Ammonia around 0; Nitrite around 0; Nitrate around 12.5 - 25 mg/l (These correspond to 'healthy' levels according to the coloured reference cards.)

Questions:

1) What's the most likely cause of this disease, given that the tank water seems healthy? Could one of the guppies I've added later have a disease?

2) Why do all the other fish seem fine and only one seems to have caught the disesase?

3) The medicine I added to the tank says that it should contain the disease - is this likely to be the case really? I don't have a 'hospital tank' nor really room for one to quarantine the fish in. In an ideal world...

4) Realistically, what chances are there of the fish recovering?

Thanks a lot - I'd appreciate any answers. Things were going so well and then when a fish gets ill it takes a bit of the fun out of it all...

Is the area growiing larger? Is it slimey or cottony(dont know if thats a word :p )? Is the fish eating properly and still active? Sorry for all the questions just trying to narrow down the symptoms to try and make an educated guess at the disease you may be dealing with. :)

It seems to be staying roughly the same size and is more a white discolouration/ (possible slime) than fluffy or like cotton wool. It's deffo not white spots and I can't see and definite parasites hanging off or anything. Fish is active and feeding fine although occasionally (the day before yesterday) flicking itself off of a sturdy plant I have in the tank.

Cheers
