Hi
Came back from a few days away to find my fish all fine... until I looked closer and saw that my smallest platy (about 3cm long) had a small white/ grey area on the left fin/gill/mouth area. Altough feeding and swimming fine her scales are slightly raised as well.
After the initial panic, I hot-stepped it to the lfs and bought some fungus/ fin-rot treatment, which I diluted and added to the tank as instructed. So I guess it's fingers crossed time.
My tank details are below and queries are as follows:
Tank - 125l UK Juwel - 6 wks in existence
Fish - 3 platys (added after 2 wks), 2 Guppies (added after 3 wks)
Levels - Ammonia around 0; Nitrite around 0; Nitrate around 12.5 - 25 mg/l (These correspond to 'healthy' levels according to the coloured reference cards.)
Questions:
1) What's the most likely cause of this disease, given that the tank water seems healthy? Could one of the guppies I've added later have a disease?
2) Why do all the other fish seem fine and only one seems to have caught the disesase?
3) The medicine I added to the tank says that it should contain the disease - is this likely to be the case really? I don't have a 'hospital tank' nor really room for one to quarantine the fish in. In an ideal world...
4) Realistically, what chances are there of the fish recovering?
Thanks a lot - I'd appreciate any answers. Things were going so well and then when a fish gets ill it takes a bit of the fun out of it all...
