I got this fella at Walmart. He was smaller than the others and has never blown a bubble, much less a bubble nest. I thought he was just young. His tail fin started out a bit raggedy, but not too bad. I just figured that he was picked on a bit. I test the water with Quick Dip test strips and everything comes out within the normal/ideal parameters except that we have hard water.

His tail fin looked worse as he lost the tissue between the 'veins' and went from having 1/2 to having 1/3 of his tail left. I started treating with Melafix, salt and changed out the gravel to more rounded pebbles. Over the last couple days, he has been looking lethargic.

Today, he has turned brownish/grey. Tonight I had a night light on and looked thru his dark tank with the nightlight in the background (checking on him). His body seems....translucent except for in the head area and a small spot by the tail. He used to be a solid dark red and I doubt a person could have seen the light thru his body. I think he is on his way out.

Btw, he is in a 1.66 gal. hex tank with a light, hood, rectangular green filter with carbon and a fake plant. He has never been willing to eat blood worms, but does eat the standard betta food in a can. No spots, fungus, etc. No inflamed tail, no rapid breathing, nothing.

I guess I want to know if anyone has a miracle remedy. Also, is the hard water the cause? If he dies, what do I do with my tank to make it ready for whatever may go in there? I don't want to pass anything on to a new fish.

Melafix is a good all rounder for the mystery illness, but maybe someone could offer a diagnosis for you?

Melafix should help with the fins and stop an infection, unless it's something like finrot, in which case, you might need specialist meds.

Sorry can't be of much help, hopefully one of the more seasoned fishybods will step up!

;)

i would add some bettaMAX (not to be confused with the bottle of poo known as bettafix) and do frequent water changes.
i dont think hard water is going to hurt the betta. bettas are pretty fleixble when it comes to ph.

be sure to keep him very warm too! he could just be cold! i doubt you have a heater for a 1.66 gal but i would suggest a reptile heat mat to place under the tank. those make the tank nice and toasty :)

yeahi agree with jac

when i use to have my 3 bettas in a bowl wtihout a heater, they would always turn pale and listless during the night, i soon found out that my temp was dropping below 70Fs during the night. So i set up my 10G and put dividers in it for them with a heater, they're veyr ahppy :D

if you're house is cold, he could turn lethargic and stuff due to the cold, a reptile mat thing would be good, except i don't know how much it costs

i got a small one that works great with my storage containers :) for about $10.
i originally bought it for my turtles a long time ago but then thought-hey i can use it for my bettas too :)
(i use mine for when one gets sick so i can keep the temp extra warm)

Sadly my little fella passed on. Still don't quite know what happened, but I will miss him. :-(

sorry about that :byebye:
if you decide to get another one, make sure you have a heater before you bring him/her home.
