Hi there,
I have one of my bettas who has been gradually losing his fins. I've put in medication and for a while it seemed to work. I have had a few odd things happen in the tank in the past few weeks, though - and his fins looks worse again. He is in a 2 gallon tank, alone. It has gravel in the bottom, a rock and two fake plants.
I can't tell you what the parameters were of the water as I just dumped it and didn't think to check it first. What is happening is that there is a thick slime coat covering the surface of the water. His bowl is unfiltered, and is changed weekly or more, and this has never happened before and is not happening with any of my other bettas.
I put the water conditioner/purifier in and added drops of fungal treatment for the fins - which I have done before - and now I'm getting this thick film on the top. It's much like when they build a bubble nest - after it breaks down it leaves little clear bits in the water. Except he's not building any nests.
Any ideas for a good fin medication for a betta? Or what's happening with this coating on the surface of the water?
I'm changing him now - just letting the water sit until it's at the right temp. - I took him out with net and put him right into fresh water, so as not to put any contaminated water in his bowl, and I've really cleaned the stones in case there is something in this little tank that's causing it.
Any ideas would be appreciated. He's a couple of years old, and deserves to live out his life with fins and healthy, so I'm willing to try anything.
Jackie
