Hi all
Can someone help me, I have had my angel fish for a year now and last night i found it face down in the gravel looking rather ill. It has not moved around much since then and the one instance I have seen him swim it looked like he was having trouble balancing and swimming on his side. Also he looks bloated. Does anyone know if this is an illness or whether it is the fish just coming to the end of its life.

Thanks

Happy new year

It could be constipation, but it sounds more like swim bladder, is the fish still eating, what does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.

The scales look ok and I have not seen him eating the last day. Have not seen the fish go to the toilet.

Swim Bladder Disorder

The Swim bladder is a gas-filled sac located inside the fish’s body cavity just above most of the other internal organs. This sac is what gives the fish buoyancy and controls equilibrium. The amount of gas in this sac changes as the fish rises and sinks in the water, enabling it to swim, hover and move in the water. Without the use of the Swim-bladder organ a fish is unable to control it's own movements.

Symptoms:

Fish with a swim bladder disorder appear to have an abnormal swimming pattern, usually with their tail end up. They also appear to have difficulty maintaining equilibrium. They may even float upside down or appear to be stuck at the surface of the water, being unable to swim down, or they may lie on the bottom, unable to rise. Fish with a swim bladder disorder will continue to try and feed, showing a normal appetite.

Cause:

The most common cause of swim bladder disorders is improper diet. An improper diet can lead to intestinal gas or intestinal blockages. Intestinal blockages can irritate the bowel, giving bacteria or other parasites an entry point where they can then cause damage to the swim bladder. Swim bladder disorders are most common in the larger, deep-bodied varieties of Goldfish. Fish also fed a lot of dried foods, especially pellets, are most susceptible. This condition is frequently observed in the later stages of Malawi Bloat, which is primarily due to an improper diet as well and intestinal irritation.

Treatment:

Because this disorder is due principally to an improper diet, a change in their feeding needs to be made. Dried foods with lots of protein should be kept to a minimum. Pellets and other dense foods should be soaked prior to feeding or completely eliminated from their diet. Foods with lots of fiber should be introduced, such as zucchini, squash, spinach, romaine lettuce, peas, and grated carrots. If you suspect that the fish is victim to a bacterial infection, treat the fish with a medicated food.

Thanks for that, most useful. Fish is looking quite weak now though but will try to put some dofferent food in but it does not seem to have any appetite to feed or is just to weak to swim to the top. He has been stuck in the same place in the tank for several hours now.

Get some medication for it as it may already be to late, Try to keep him near the surface like putting him in an ice-cream box floating at top so he has the ability to get air- If he is still left at the bottom feed him something that sinks like catfish pellets. Aim so they land next to his mouth.
Try to keep all other fish away from him as this may stress him out more and the other fish are likely to abuse him when he is immobile.
Hope i helped Animation

Ok thanks for that, im off to pet shop now to see what i can find in the way of pellets etc.

Will let you know how i get on.

Thanks

Hi just tried the pellets and he is not interested in them at all, didn't even move so I dont think it is looking too good at the moment.

Sorry, bless him, once they stop eating not a good outcome i'm afraid.

another twist in the tale here, I have two Angel fish in total along with another 9 or so fish from Guppies,Shark and catfish.

About an hour ago I check on the condition on the first angel only to find that the second angel was acting just the same, head down on the gravel using the tank side to prompt it self up. But another hour has gone by and he is back swimming again upright, the first fish still looks just as sick.

I have this feeling that I have a problem with both fish now, all the other fish look fine and the Angels are over a year old and so are most of the other fish. I have not changed feeding habbits at all nor have i introduced any new fish into the tank. I am just concerened now that i might lose all my fish instead of just the angels.

I can't help you I'm afraid as I'm new on here. But I'm sure that someone on here can help you - get all your water readings done because I know they will want to know what they are to be able to diagnose whatever it is.

Hope you get it sorted out quickly :(

edited to say: bump your thread if you don't get any replies so it goes back to the top of the emergencies
