Shrimpy Sanctuary

Right, not gonna type everything out again because A) you probably know whats happened and B) It's late and i cant be bothered.

So, basically I have a tank I thought I wouldnt have, and two shrimp, which have bred and now I have shrimp babies.

This tank will now be set up to be a shrimp only tank, planted with rocks and caves that i'll make myself hopefully.

Not sure about wood yet or not, we'll see.


Now I need your help with stuff.

I currently have a sponge filter and a 25W heater. Better than nothing!

I have not a lot of money so cant go buying brand new eheims etc as I just cant afford it, and tbh I dont think a shrimp tank needs eheims..

So Question number 1.
Has anyone got any ideas where I can get a decent filter and heater, preferably second hand or as cheap as possible that i know will work for a shrimp tank?

What size tank is it? I have two 65l Shrimp breeding tanks and I use the 'Aqua Flow 100' on them. They are small but powerful little filters. Remove the carbon from inside and add some biomax and you have a great little filter. They come with a spraybar as well which the Shrimp seem to love. Oh and place a stocking around the bottom to stop Shrimpletts getting sucked in. I picked mine up brand new off ebay for less than a tenner

Oh and Shrimp love hiding in the nooks and crannies in bogwood. I have quite a bit of it along with lots of moss and anubis in my tanks.

its about 100l, so that filter would be unsuitable!

And as i said, i dont know about bogwood, i had it before and i get annoyed with it especially the horrible mouldy fungus rubbish it grows.

Glad to see you're not completely out of the hobby Hanny. Tbh I would just get a HOB, cheap, unbranded from ebay. Shrimps really dont have much bioload and the filter wont take up any room. For a heater i would do the same, i got a 50w for 7.99 delivered. You're not reakly gonna get much cheaper than that unless you can find someone having a clear out...

What lph would you recommend for the HOB then? and yes I found a JAD heater 100W and an unbranded one for about £8 but i dont want it blowing up on me thats all, ive heard about peoples things breaking especially those ones that you can find from hong kong..

Yeah cazzie did a thread with the code think it was summer11 or summin. Try the all pond solutions website. The heater will be ok I reckon, shrimps like it cool anyway it wont come on much atm

When mine broke the ebay shop sent me a new one anywag, three months after I purchased. And no it didnt blow up lol. Think the shop was AquariumHK, but its based in the UK

To be honest, if it's a shrimp only tank, you really don't need an additional filter. A sponge filter is perfectly fine with shrimp because of the small bio-load they produce.

tbh the tank is in my bedroom and the sponge filter is way too noisy for my boyfriend to tolerate.

i love it but he doesnt as hes a very light sleeper.

i have no idea! it was about 3mm long and silvery see through. just a generic looking fry, i imagine from the dnrs..
