Hello,

I would love to get some shrimp for my 10G but on reading i find sand is the preferred substrate I have small black grave about 2mm

Do I have to have sand if i want Shrimps I have sand in my other tanks but one has a GSP which will eat the shrimps and the other a community which might not offer them the best chance.

Help appreciated.

Any substrate can be used, i think... :good:

As long as its not gunna like... crush the shrimp if it falls, it should be okay.

Any substrate is fine, they have no preference. :good:

I think most people use sand with shrimp because most people keep them in heavily planted tanks and the plants appreciate the sand.

It's actually really cute if you keep ghost shrimp with larger grained substrate because you can see them reaching down into the crevices.

I agree with tyler. I have smallish pea gravel and they are always searching for leftovers-you know how it is- why have algae when you can have flake seconds lol :hyper:

Indeed you can use gravel, thats whats in my shrimp tank.

I've seen ADA Amzonia recommended for CRS by some people as it can lower the PH to a level the shrimp prefer but as mine are breeding in my hard slightly alkaline water I don't see the point in spending the extra cash as it is seriously expensive.

I have Eco-Complete substrate in my planted tank with Amano/Japonica Shrimp. I find that the shrimp spend more time on my driftwood, plants, and glass than they do on the actual substrate.

Great now I can't wait to get some. What should be the average price from the LFS as the one I use in Stirling I find very expensive.

I see them on ebay for £1.00 each plus postage.

The average for Anamo and Cherry shrimp seems to be £2/3 each in my area. Other shrimp cost a little more but are rarely in stock anywhere.

If you are thinking of ebay then look in the buy/sell section here, There are a few Cherry shrimp for sale in there.
