Shrimp Question

Ok I have a small hair algae problem and im looking for something to add to the tank to help clean it off the plants and things. I originally was going to get some kind of plecco but a kind poster told me thats kinda anti productive. So I looked online and I got my eye on getting a couple shrimp for the tank as I never had them before and I think it would be a cool addition to the fish tank ( 24 gallon JBJ nano cube)

I am trying my hardest to find a red nose shrimp but 3 local fish stores don't carry it and most of them never even heard of it. Does anyone know of a website I can order some from?

The one fish website that I am aware of for ordering doesnt have any BUT they have something that looks similar called Japonica Amano Shrimp ( http/www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_di...amp;pcatid=1843 )

I was wondering if these shrimp would be similar or if this Japonica shrimp just stays more to the ground and can't swim around like the red nose can.

I can't answer your questions directly, but have you found the latin names for the shrimp you want? If so then this is a better guide when enquiring at you lfs! I went in asking for sparkling/pygmy gouramis the other day, they hadn't got a clue what I was on about. When I gave them the latin name they were like 'oooooh you mean the jewel gourami'. I don't know if it directly applies to shrimp, but it's an idea

And why specifically shrimp? Snails also eat algae... you could get a couple as well as the shrimp.

well no real reason why just shrimp. I never owned my own fish tank I grew up with a couple via my dad but this is the first one im running on my own. We always would just get a plecco or something and he would just be a clean freak about it. Me im looking for something more natural to take care of it. Shrimp seemed like an interested and new thing to try. Never had snails so ya I could do a combo. No idea what the latin names are but if you google the shrimp with the names I gave above its real easy to find them *shrug*

Caridina Gracilirostras but poss Caridina Gracilirostris. I think one is singular and one is plural. But that is the latin of the shrimp you described...they seem quite rare to be honest. But if that's what you like then that's what you like! So long as you can get hold of them and then care for them then, go for it!

I personally have been trying to get hold of some nerite snails, zebra, bumblebee and ruby.
But apples snails are also very popular(come in a variety of colours)

Try Snail Shop, they also do inverts if you're after buying some shrimp at the same time.

Shrimps + snails from reputable sellers on ebay also aren't a bad idea if you fancy that.
Get a good lfs though and you will probably be able to source everything you want through them.

Yea it figures the one shrimp I really get set on also happens to be impossible to find lol

good shrimps for hair algae are amanos

another name for the shrimp you want is pinocchio shrimp - try ebay or ask your lfs to order some for you
what fish have you got in your tank?

I tried a search with that other nickname and still can't find anything as far as buying them. I guess this is a really rare shrimp...

Anyway I bought 4 Japonica Amano Shrimp (hopefully thats not to many for a 24 gallon tank?)

make sure you plant the tank well on the bottom and that the shrimp have plenty of hiding places small caves and java moss

They're not rare just search for the rednose shrimp and you'll find them there's lots available for about £3 a shrimp

Amanos will breed in fresh water but their babies will die - so they will have eggs and hatch larve but the larve need to be transferred into salt water to survive into shrimplets

Just to say, Amano's do swim around if they feel safe. I have only 3, in my Betta tank. they are brilliant. (and very very efficient) I don't have experience with other Shrimp. One of my local lfs does stock the red noses though, saw them today. Where are you based?

well FYI im in the USA so that might be why its harder for me to find any?

Anyway I have a driftwood cave formed by 2 pieces 2 aniubus and 2 amazon swords w/ the 4 tetras

I have 3 amano shrimp and they keep things in good order. They are also quite brave and you can see them wandering around. The only drawback with shrimp is you cant put any meds in the tank if you get an outbreak of anything as it will kill them, and if you have to take them out of the tank they are a bugger to find and catch!!

Armano shrimp are fantastic at clearing algae, and have cleared my tank of it within a week.
They can swim however mine spend most of their time cleaning away.
