i was thinking about putting a shrimp or a snail in with my bettas, to help clean up any food that is left behind. is there any reason that i shouldn't?
ghost shrimp do a good job of cleaning up. i've had one for both my bettas. they lasted a few days before becoming dinner but since they're only about 30 cents it wasn't a big deal. if you do get ghost shrimp, try to make sure there's at least one hiding place the shrimp can go to escape your betta's hungry mouth.
I try to keep one small Ramshorn or Apple snail in with my Bettas to keep their tanks clean (a friend was being overrun and gave me a ton of young ones). Some of the Bettas leave them alone and others make a meal out of them So I guess it depends on your Betta, and you won't know until you try.
Well this thread answers my query about whether Bettas eat escargo or not! I couldn't figure out where all the snails kept disappearing to in the 10 gallon...then I found an empty snail shell or two while cleaning and got suspicious. I knew the ottochinclus weren't doing it...that left one culprit....and Jack looks like such a gentleman too...what a little piggy! Oh well, it cuts down on fish food I guess.
I've done ghost shrimp with bettas. Normally they get eaten. But the last time...the shrimp shred up my bettas tail!!! Haven't done that again since. There was NOTHING else in there that could have done that.
