I've done a rather impulsive thing ..... again!
I planned to get a new tank and put in some shrimp, as I've always admired them. I have a quarantine tank in my utility room (with a few corys in to keep the tank up until/if it is needed).

When visiting my lfs, I noticed some Amano shrimp - they don't become available around here very often, so I got some! When visiting my second lfs, I noticed some cherry shrimp at 50p each - couldn't pass them up I'm afraid.
And also, some (I think) red-clawed crabs.

I would imagine that the crabs would snack on the shrimps given a chance, but the shrimps are fast little things, and the crabs don't bother with the corys - the crabs are still less than an inch wide.

Problem is, every time I try to feed the corys the shrimp descend like little locusts and devour the grub! Now, to make it even worse, the crabs lie in wait, grab the tablets of food and run off with them!

Corys still have loads to eat, but think that I am probably best getting them out of there into one of my other tanks! Less competiton.

When I have finished the building work in the house (should be soon) I am getting a new tank which I plan to put the shrimp/crabs. I think I'll silicone a ledge towards the top of the tank and then the crabs can get out the water fully and in comfort if they wish. At the moment, they are perched on bogwood which protrudes from the water - they seem happy enough, and are eating for England!

If the tank is large enough, can they co-exist? I would expect a possible loss of one or two shrimp, but on the whole they seem to ignore the crabs and still keep ahead of them.

Assuming I eventually have 40 shrimp and around 5 small crabs, what size tank would be comfortable enough for them?

a 50-55 gallon should be good, I don't think they would bother each other. I'd expect the cories to eat them  Don't get any loaches though. They are devils to the shrimp.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to do something rather quickly on the tank stakes, as my quarantine tank (three weeks old) has just developed a hairline crack!
It's not yet leaking, and the lfs has agreed to exchange.
That's exchange - not, here's a new one - bring in the old one when you've swapped your fish over!

I asked if I could pay for a new one, take it home and put my livestock in it immediately - then bring in the old empty one. NO - Apparently it's easier to put the transaction through the till if we bring in the old tank first!

So, I'm having to catch my shrimps/crabs/catfish and put them in a picnic cool box (nice and insulated, with heater and small pump) overnight! AAArrrrrggghhh!

Gives me an opportunity to get the corys out, I suppose!
:-(

Good luck, hope the move doesn't stress them out too much. And good on you for noticing the crack and quickly doing something about it. :)
