I just got this 29 gallon tank setup and so it will take sometime to cycle and get it ready. But when I am ready I am thinking about getting shrimp for this tank. Is BDBS safe for shrimp? I am asking this because it is the first time I have ever used BDBS as a substrate.

Thanks Everyone.

I don't have an answer but I am interested in hearing about your experience with BDBS! I made the choice of going with that for the 125 (when I actually eventually go pick it up....) so I'll be following along to see how it works for you!!

This is my first time to use BDBS as a cap and second time to use my homemade aquasoil. So this is an experiment to see how it works out. It will be at least two to three weeks before I even think of putting live critters in it, I have to cycle it and finish getting it setup.

I will tell you this, the BDBS that I am using is like a fine black powder, even more fine in grain then play sand. Pool filter sand has much bigger grains of sand then play sand, that is why I choose pool filter sand in my old aquarium that is now long gone. Having said this although the BDBS that I am using is like a fine powder, it is very heavy, where play sand is light. What that means is that when the play sand is kicked up into the water column it hangs there longer, this allows a better chance of it being sucked up into the HOB filter's motor. I ruined the first motor on my HOB with play sand. This BDBS will settle right back down. But this means that it packs tighter then pool filter sand and what that means is plants have a harder time with their roots getting through this BDBS. That is why I only used a thin layer as a cap for my aquasoil.

Yes it is. I have srimp tank with it.

Thanks for the info, I want to get some shrimp for this new setup once it is cycled and ready.

Are you using the 20/40 or the 30/60 grade?
I don't know did not think about that....duh. Tomorrow I will look at it and see. I am pretty sure it is the finer of those two, because it is powder like. But it seems to be working good in the tank.
