I've heard a lot about Show Quality bettas lately, and how Veil tails aren't allowed to participate, and how a good fish has this and that, but what are the qualifications for showing Betta? How does it really work?

Are there any Betta shows in Montreal or Ottawa that anyone knows of? I'd be interested in seeing a show to learn more about them hands on. I guess I'm just interested since I've never been to a pet show of any sorts, let alone one designed for fish.

Thanks for any info you can give me :) (Websites would be great, if possible)

I believe the show season is almost over this year. There really aren't too many qualifications, if you have a nice betta to show, you send him in or bring him personally and he competes with the others (beauty contest  ). Veiltails usually are not found in that scene but hey...ya never know :dunno: A lady was telling me that her daughter found a veiltail at Walmart stuffed behind the candy at the register, he had been set down several days before, starving and filthy. Her daughter took him home, brought him back to health and won when she showed him

That would have really pissed me off, if I were to find a fish in that condition...

And I'd do the same exact thing. I'd bully the husband into buying a jar, bring the poor thing home and fix him up. I hope to one day get into shows, if there are any in Montreal or Ottawa, for now, I can't. My veil tail/whatever he is is pretty, but he isn't show quality. Perhaps the cambodians I saw in walmart, but that would take a lot of work and a spare 2.5+ tank to bring him back to health.

Betta rescue is something I'm going to keep on my list of things to "do" when I have more money and more room :) I'm sure the bedroom dresser would look fantastic with 10 gallon tanks all over. ;)

LOL@ cackle

Yes, we're all guilty of betta rescue :X It's an addiction I tells ya! I have waaay too many rescued bettas hanging around the house  They're my useless pretties

JR (my husband) has heard nothing but how sorry I felt for that little fishie today.

Damn, I should have brought him home and put him in a bowl. Then JR would come home and go "WHAT IS THAT?"

Then I'd dimple, sniffle and say "I felt sorry for him. Look! He NEEEEEDED my help!"

I shoulda. Oh well :)

 I'll always wubbers that adorable little neon betta. ;)

Thats ok though! Saturday, I DEFINITELY get a new betta!! :D

Ya know, my husband used to ask "Who's that? Is he for breeding or just for mooching?" and I'd reply
"Mooching, I felt so sorry for him,I couldn't leave him there to die in that cup!!"

He would roll his eyes and say we really don't need anymore free riders, only get breeding stock from now on yada yada. After a few rounds of that he eventually just stopped asking

My husband and I have a bit of an arrangement. I currently can have one tank, and I can do what I want with it.

If I spend my own money on it, I can have it

He just doesn't realize I'll gladly spend enough to have 4-100000000 betta ;)

*SNICKER*

right now, I'm going to have three though. Thats fair enough, and it'll leave me the spare tank should a CANNOT LET THIS FISH GO!!! comes up. And with a little work, I can split the 3 way divided 10 gallon into a four way.

*puuurrrrr*

I had spent just about all of my pocket cash on my bettas. Though I cannot take anything out of the bank right now... must control the obsessiooon. Though I do at any time take a rescue.
