Are there any shovelnose's that are smaller? Something that does not get bigger than a foot I guess is what I'm looking for.

The smallest shovelnose species are Sorubim lima and Hemisorubim platyrynchos but both these fish will grow to slighty over a foot with a average captive size of 14". The next closest thing i can think of that doesnt grow over a foot is Pimelodus ornatus which max's out at around 11" and usually smaller.

What type of fish, and size of fish could be kept with the Sorubim lima and Hemisorubim platyrynchos?

Peacefull/semi aggressive Cichlids, Characins and oddballs over 6 inches make the best tankmates for the medium sized Pimeloid species such as these.

lima's are quite a gentle shovel nose.i would be careful with ciclids.anything should be fine as long as it wont fit in the lima's mouth.mine started to eat my red torpedo's at £13 a pop so i learnt the hard and expensive way lol.

I keep Oscars, peacock bass, a Saxatilis pike and severums with my limas, i have also had earth eaters (Satanoperca/geophagus) and acara's in the past and have not had any problems with any of these fish. The Cichlids to avoid are Central American and African species which tend to be much more aggressive than their South American cousins.
I also keep stingrays, other medium/large catfish, bichirs and a arowana with them too.

Ok sounds good. Thanks guys! Some day in the near future I am going to have a 75 gallon with a lima and a blue acara and maybe something else.
