hi guys,

i have around 7 cardinal tetras in my 40 gallon, water stats are perfect, no other fish showing any other problems.

i woke up today and one of the cardinals was swimming around really fast rolling over, he was upside down and all sorts, so i put him into my smaller tank on his own, now he is just resting on the bottom on his side, but his gills and mouth are still moving. I already have a cup of water in the freezer to kill him humainly.

should i do the deed?

thanks lewis

Well first you need to figure out the problem, it may also be worth mentioning that not everyone agrees that freezing is humane.

I think that for a fish as small as a cardinal freezing is humane.

Sounds like it MAY be a swim bladder issue.

If it were my fish I think I would euthanise it. Just make sure the water is cold enough. IE. has a layer of ice on top.

Hi guys, unfortuanately i had to do it  and i hated it.

the water was ICE cold, and i put him in the cup and he sank to the bottom and after around 3 seconds, hills gills and mouth were not moving, he diddnt even struggle that is how weak he was, he was just lay on the bottom with his mouth and gills moving in the tank, even when i caught him with the net he diddnt bother to move  he had also gotten bloated aswell.

i think i did the right think by putting the little dude out of his misery but it was not at all enjoyable.

thanks guys

Though people may not agree, I believe that freezing is very humane. As long as you have a ton of ice inside, and small fish, it take only a couple seconds, not even.

Sorry for your loss. :rip:
Hope you can figure out what happened... :(

Freezing is humane I guess, to an extent, it isn't instant so there is still a few moments of suffering however it isn't easy to avoid those few seconds ;)

hmm... i dont agree, the poor little guy was so weak that only his gills and mouth were slightly moving when i got him out of the tank, the water ICE ICE cold, as soon as he went in his mouth and gills stopped and he was gone, IMO it is very humaine, even if he does last for a bit, he cant feel it, the extreme cold would kill the nerve endings anyway, so he wouldnt be able to feel anything.. :rip:
