Well now, I'm sure I don't really need all those books on my shelves :) Before everyone gets up in arms, here's a few things to consider-
* Its not a definate. Its a very large maybe.
* No, I haven't read up majorly yet, however this is because I'm not sure if I will
* I have enough room for a fair few jars
* I'm hoping to get a 30g for my birthday, the contents of which can be adapted depending on breeding or not.
* I'm not going to breed VT's. I'll either get a pair from bettaman, or see if the lfs has a nice CT pair (which I doubt, but you never know)
* As for selling them, I have several options. Ebay, lfs's or freeads. Or fish forums.

There are probably other things. Before I consider it, which are better-
A gallon tank divided into 2 (which works out a bit over 50p per betta) Or a 3g divided into 3 (which is more expensive at £5 for 3 but easier to fit on shelves)

Microworms or BBS or both

Anyway, what are your views? Moneywise, I'm saving up for whatever, and I also have a bithday soon. I'd also spread purchases out. Also, when you jar the males, how often does the water need changing? And what is the average outcome of a spawn?

I think you'd enjoy it and it seems like you've done your research. As for housing the fry, you'll probably want to skip past the shared tanks so that water changes will be easier on you. They should be done every other day, container size pending.

If you can get a bunch of live cultures it will greatly cut down on your food cost. BBS and micros are recommended for the first 4 weeks. The bbs is essential IMO and the worms are good for snacking on in between meals.

The outcome really depends on your father. I've had spawns put out over 300 and I've had spawns that have resulted in one lone fry. It's hard to say for sure because it varies so much.

So skip the shared tanks... Hrm... What if I had one 1g tank per male, then divided if need be? TBH, I actually think it would work out cheaper than beanie boxes. The only trouble is the shape. Although the lfs did have some just under a gallon tanks that aren't massive.... At the moment, I'm working out re-shuffling my room for the 30g I really want, then I'll see what room I have for bettas. Do the 'jars' need to be heater or not?

What temperature will your betta room be in the summer? If it's usually 70-80 in there, you shouldn't need heaters. You might want to keep a space heater around if you live somewhere that gets the occasional cold day in the summer, but if not, you should be fine without. I usually unplug my heaters in the summer.

Both my betta tanks are unheated (well, one is but its so bad it might as well not exist...), and the thermometer (an insidey one) says its in the 'safe zone'. Which I can't remember the temp. of.

hey i am gonna sound really dumb, as this is my first betta website i am unsure of the terminolgy you all use, for instance what is BBS - MICROS - IMO.
you help on this and any other terminolgy you think i may need to help me out with this site will be gratefully recieved.

many thanx

In my opinion (IMO) baby brine shrimp (BBS) and microworms (MICRO`S) are all good food

hope that helps...............

Well, the chances are upped slightly :) The parents have caught the hints about my room not being big enough to hold the tanks I want, and Dad's offered to build a 'rack' system which (he says) could hold several 30g's. and I'm sure they won't object if I make money out of it (seriously, they'll think it's a wonderful idea if I can make money out of it). So if all goes to plan, I can have several 30gs with my major fish in and leave the 20 for a growout. I'll start stocking up on 1 gallons tanks, they are handy anyway for QT, spares in case I see a nice betta but have nowhere to put it (don't you hate that?).

You'll be lucky to break even. :(

But it'll be some of the hardest, most gratifying breaking-even you'll ever do!  :look:

True. I've worked out that if I go with the 1 gallons, I can get 20 for 27 pounds. I can get a mw culture for 4 pounds, a decent pair for 20 ish pounds plus.... etc. The 1 gallons would be put to use anyway,.
