I just opened the front lid to my tank and was lowering a cucumber into my tank for my plecs and received a shock from my light on my tank. I don't even think I touched the light at the time but it certainly made me drop my cucumber. So then I lifted the light unit slightly so I would have more room to get it into my tank and got a further 2 shocks :shout:
Is anyone familyer to the light unit on a Cleair tank as I was wandering I could sort the lights out, it has screw on ends on the light tubes similar to the juwel lights but I cant seem to find anywhere that stocks Cleair to buy any spares

Can anyone help please

i was trying to look on Cleair's website but Google blocks it as a dangerous website!?!?

Sounds to me as though a wire is loose and its not earthed.

Are you able to remove the lighting unit / hood and take some pictures and put them on here for us to see?

Just unscrewed one of the end caps on the bulbs to find that water had been getting into the light bulb fitting and had corroded the end of one of the light tubes so I need to buy some new screw end caps so they are water tight again. Then perhaps I won't get any more shocks but where can I get them from???
If anyone know where I can purchase CLEAIR spares please let me know. Thanks

It wont be earthed as it is double insulated. Seems as though some water has got in an somewhere & the electricity is tracking along the tube to your hand.

DO NOT USE IT AGAIN UNTILL THIS IS SORTED OUT

Whoops, just read that last post. Seems like I was correct. I would think that the endcap seals are pretty universal so try a different make if you are having problems.

you might find better than this if you search around. You basically want T8 waterproof end caps.

Ok so your rig is probably double insulated(?) although if any metal is visible on your hood i would have tought it would be earthed, where did the shock come from in your opinion? from the bulb? if so then it is as simple as water condensation working its way around the contacts in which case these might do the job (or something similar):

The first shock came from around by the end cap although I didn't think I touched it at the time. The next shock was from when I lifted the light unit up from the middle of the unit which seemed to come from the bulb itself but all the casing underneath the unit is metal so probably came from this. But I would say the main cause of this would be from the end cap due to the tube being ceroded on the end. I think the casing most be earthed because the shocks wasn't any thing to big.
Many thanks for those links I shall look into them and hopefully get it sorted :D
