Has anyone used these SHO lights in their aquarium? The lights are unfortunately huge..and it seems without buying another hideous ''fixture'' from the site directly I can't find anything conventional to actually fit the bulb into. lol

My girlfriend has one of those bare-bones type reptile reflectors but the base of the bulb won't even sink far enough into that to screw in..furthermore she's already made it clear she doesn't want one of those on top of MY aquarium. Guys..you know how this goes. Unfortuantely the only reflector they sell on this website looks nearly exactly the same..its just tailor made to fit the bulbs they sell.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a cheap alternative that's aesthetically pleasing ($40-$100) possibly even a pendant that can somehow direct the light down into the aquarium.

I guess this isn't a question for anyone who hasn't used SHO because the bulbs are 10" long and 3-4" in diameter. Huge, simply put.

Since I'm on the subject though...if anyone has any better ideas for lighting...I have a 30 gallon HEX aquarium. This is 28" tall and roughly 18" wide. Not many lights are suitable to use with this in the PLANTED aquarium. I've been running a 40w - 150w incandescent equivalent (highest output CFL I've found without getting as big as SHO), and my high light plants aren't dying...but they don't grow well either. The bottoms of my frill are dying and flying into the filter (tops continue to shoot up), and there's another plant that grows maybe 1mm a month.

The current fixture I have is something like a post lamp meant to hover over a desk with adjustable light and relflector but the SHO obviously won't fit (its a full 4" too long).

Thanks in advance.

Plants will grow as long as they recieve light in the visible spectrum.

That is a good tip, and I'm not ungrateful, but that wasn't necessarily what I was looking for in a response - to be blunt its kind've redundant information. :)

Thanks for responding in any case. lol

Edit: I should clarify that open-top - this tank would have all kinds of options for lighting...unfortunately its right next to a door and under the heat/AC vent. So having a top on my tank is kind've a necessity, which rules out some things like Metal Halide (would probly be overkill anyway) and most other pendant style lights...
