Should I remove the shells I've just put in my cycling freshwater tropical tank?

I bought some shells to add a bit of decor to my tank. Listed as for aquariums so great, bought some.
Boiled them then rinsed off in treated water.
Seem to have a lot of tiny bits floating everywhere now. Sand particles? Not sure.
Just came across an article '10 things not to add to freshwater tanks'. Shells was one of them, saying it can change the PH and add unwanted calcium.

If you're unsure, I wouldn't chance it. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Shells are fine for aquariums but can cause the pH to go up.

Shells don't normally release fine bits but some shells are painted in a clear lacquer to make them shiny. This lacquer can peel off and break into bits.
No lacquer on them. Think I'll remove them. Probably wasn't a good idea while it's going through a cycle. Thanks
