Hi all, I have just joined this forum, I got my first tank today its around 230ltr / 50 gall, can anybody advise me on what sharks would be suitable, also I will be setting the tank up as tropical and would like a variety of other fish.

many thanks

I've just read about Bala Sharks and they need a 50 (at adult size) gallon and seem suitable. They are quite spooky and need suitable tankmates. They are nicely coloured. They need to be kept in groups of preferably 2 and up.

Lucy (only beginner correct me if im wrong anyone)

Heres some information from a site :

The Bala shark is simply a cool fish. They look like miniature sharks with their silver coloration and tall dorsal fin, even more so than other cyprinids known as freshwater "sharks." They are peaceful fish, despite their large size, and they can even be kept with small tetras and guppies.

Balas are fast swimmers and may take a while to settle in. They can be housed temporarily in a ten gallon tank when under 4 inches, but please move them to better quarters ASAP. I listed the requirements for tank size as 45 gallons, but they are best in 55 gallon and above aquariums. If you do squeeze a bala into a 45 gallon, keep only two and give them plenty of plants, plastic or real, in which to hide.

These fish are nearly as popular as cory cats, and unfortunately, they get sold to people with ten gallon systems who just don't know better. These sharks grow much larger than the other sharks, like rainbow and red-tails. They are also peaceful and would not go well with aggressive red-tail and rainbow sharks, unless they are in a massive tank.

Balas make clicking noises when they eat. This is startling at first, but soon you come to love it--and you start to think something is wrong when you don't hear it! They also have a fun habit of sticking their entire heads out of the water when devouring food on the surface, just like great white sharks.

Bala sharks dont grow that fast, so a pair would be fine for a long time. I've have a few in obe of my community tanks for a couple of years now and they're only about 8 inches.

I also had a group of 6 rts in a tank together many years ago, with no problems.

Thanks for the help, Ive gone with a couple of balas they look fantastic with the moonlight on , I've thought of what Davo 86 said but Dont worry Davo I will be upgrading the tank later this year. Many thanks.

You can have great combinations of balas and angels etc in tanks that size - most LFS's do it to show off, but it looks very effective.

Just make sure it's well planted and has lots of rocks and it should be fine :good:

i got a group of three bala's out of a small aquarium from a friend thinking they would grow slowly, they are anywhere from 5-7 inches now and grew from only about an inch and a half in 7 months. they grow very quickly, highly active, and is the only thing in my tank that still freak out when anyone is in the room. Did I mention they LOVE to jump! you have to watch yourself when you are cleaning the tank!

I wouldn't do balas in a 55gal. They don't grow that slowly, and nobody will take them once they outgrow it.

I had 2 bala sharks in a 90g and they grew to 10 inches in 2 years. They now reside in the London Aquarium. The bigger the tank the quicker and bigger they grow.

I kept Bala's for a while and one thing I would add is, carefull with rocks as Bala's are skittish and swim into things, like rocks, and take chunks out of themselves.
