hiya,

i have two columbian sharks that i love loads but they are starting to act really weired, they keep trying to jump out of the tank, so far they havent fallen out but it is makeing it hard to clean the gravel properly.......i have a small tetra tank next to the main one and im worried that they may be trying to get to them

could they be trying to get to the neons?
could it be that its time to put them into salty water?
i have a problem if it is, as they have befreinded my pictus and i dont really want to separate them yet, can the pictus go into brackish water as well?
they already are in slightly salty water but how would i know if this is enough?

thanks for any help you can give

Is the sharks tank brackish?

CFC taught me that they act really weird, doing strange stuff when they start wanting to migrate to brackish water. Maybe they're trying to migrate.

Did you recently change the flow in the tank? They tend to want to swim against current. That might be your problem. The pictus is not going to see the humor in brackish conditions, no.

thank you for all of your replys, they have stopped trying to jump )

appart from when i clean the tank :D
my tank had an amonia spike which my water testing kit didnt pick up, done loads of water changes and they have started swimming in the current wile sticking there fins out of the water again

its great to see them happy )

but one question still puzzels me, when do you know it is time to put them into a saltwater tank?

what can i do with the pictus? is there anyother large cats that he can swim with?

They don't go into saltwater until they're almost fully grown.

will that be when they are about 10"?

will they let me know by going nuts again?

That sounds about right. Just keep an eye on them whe they reach maturity.
