Okay so my boyfriend thought he would go out and buy me some fish as a nice thing to do and he bought me two shark catfish. I tried to return them but the LFS wouldn't take them back after my boyfriend had thrown them in the air and they crashed to the street, they were pretty beat up little fish. :-( So I put them in the 55 gallon with the tiger barbs and black skirt tetras. The tank was "half-brackish" as the previous owner had called it since he would add aquarium salt to the tank very often. So I thought they would do best in a slightly salted tank rather than 100% freshwater.

About a month later, one started to change really light silver while the other one changed a really dark silver almost like a dark grey/black. I had no clue why they changed color but I was worried they were ill. :-(

Then today when I did a water change, I found the lighter shark catfish dead underneath the filter. He/she looks like he/she was nibbled on a bit but no other signs of injuries or illness. Now the darker shark catfish will swim around for awhile and then kind of drift on his side and then he will swim again. It is really weird and I have no clue what could be wrong with him.

I feel bad because I can't give him an ideal tank, but I am doing the best I can and I feel so bad. I don't know anyone who would take him. :-(

What should I do? :dunno:

Darkening of colour can be a bacteria infection, and with also him tilting on his side sounds like it could be abit of swim bladder problem.

Also if you have some daphnia i would add some to the tank.

Does it sound like it could be swim bladder.

No He can keep his balance for the most part...I just don't know what it could be. He isn't floating to the top or anything just drifting to one side.

It's up to you but i think with the darkness of the fish I would medicate with an anti internal bacteria med.

i know this doesnt help much, but my shark catfish was dead when i got home after a 3 day trip and i had noticed before i left that his color had faded a little bit. When i got home he was very badly nipped at(no fins and could see the bones in his side fins ) so i was never able to figure out why he died.
