Now i'm tempted!!!!

Had a spare 30mins so this afternoon so I stopped at my lfs to peruse the fish (Tank still cycling, Ammonia back to zero and nitrite heading down as well).

I didn't fancy live rock at first, until I saw the stuff he has curing/cured (Fiji) and at £10 a kilo (2.2 lbs) a bit of a bargain.

2 questions......

1) I know this is about the same as 'how long is a piece of string', but, what size would 1kg of live rock be? (very rough ballpark size, cricket ball size, football size)

2) Would it be safe for the rock to be put in my tank now as it is cycling, or indeed would it help with the cycling OR would it be best to wait until it has cycled?

------------------

Cheers all

Terry

Hi there Terry

1st - that is a no bad price for LR

2nd - I cycled my tank with LR in it

3rd - size - Havent a clue - as you say How longs a piece of string - really depends on type of rock as well

Would go for it - I would suggest 0.5kg per Gallon

Thanks mate, I'll head down in the morning and have a chat with the guy there.

the £10 price tag certainly beats the £14-16 per kg I have seen around the area, plus, unlike a couple of other (big, garden center type) places I have been to, I trust the guy down there to know what he is talking about.

You will be amazed at how hypnotic staring at Live rock will be - I remmber staring at mine willing something to pop out of it

:D :D :D

Good luck tomorrow

£10/KG is a good price! Make sure you have a good look at the LR before purchase, what kinda stuff is growing on it, is there plenty of purple? :)

As for weight/size.... Some rocks are alot more porous so have alot more air in them. Others are solid ocean rock, so it varies quite alot.... You should be able to ask them to weigh some pieces for you.

Well, got my first 10kg of LR in the tank and :

1) wow, 48 hr's later and the water looks fantastic, the Ammonia and Nitrite are at zero.

2) Purple stuff everywhere, snails, crabs..........It's better than the damn TV (hey...I live in the UK)

Not being one to rush things, I think it could be time for a cleanup crew and hell....who know's, in a few days...p'haps a fish :)

(just think about the first time you saw something cool, or indeed alive, in your first marine tank :hyper: )

regards

Terry

Keep an eye on the levels, DONT rush it, certainly don't add a fish within a couple of days whatever your levels are. Add a cleanup crew of crabs and snails then wait a good week, wait for your algae to start blooming and then drop off before you add the fish.

You say you aren't one to rush things but you are mentioning adding fish within "a few days".... Don't contradict yourself and take your time.
