to tell the difference between males and females? I have 3 in a 29 gallon and I'm guessing they are all the same age. Two of them look pretty plump, and one is skinny. Is it possible that the plump ones are female and the other is a male?

Any help is appreciated,
Ed

hi there
yup you're right -
girl zebra danios are much plumper around their bellies than the sleeker males. we've also found that the males tend to be a more goldish colour with the blue stripes the girls are more silver with blue stripes :D

They look the same color to me, they are too fast to tell really. The 2 rounder Danio's always chase each other, and the thinner one is usually off by itself, but get's chased once in awhile too. Thanks for more info on sexing my Danio's.

I have 4 Zebra's and one gets chased by the others. The one being chased is larger and more browner/golder than the others. I assumed this was the female being chased by males but maybe it's the other way around. :dunno:

None of them look plump. Maybe they're all males.

My 2 look really plump, but they have been that way for a couple of weeks now. Nothing noticeably different than now.

Supposedly??
they are!!

if the females are happy and want to spawn - every few weeks they will get even plumper. then one morning you will come down and they whont be plump any more :)

they scatter their eggs at first light. they then try as hard as they can to eat them :( in the wild the eggs would be carried down stream and inamongst plants etc.

i've posted a guide to breeding leopard danios on this thread(as i did it - not a bible or anything fancy).

its much easier to tell the difference when theyre a bit more mature not so when theyre teeny tiny little things swimming at a million miles an hour although they still swim at a million miles an hour its much easier to see the shape differences!!!!

our females are always spawning - just have to watch the tiger barbs going mad munching the eggs 2 secs afterwards ( bloody cannibals!!!) we must get a breeding trap or something & see if we can get any to grow/hatch :)

So i'd need to move the adults into a new tank and leave the eggs if i wanted babies, right? I figured out i have 2 females and one is starting to get a plump belly.

seperate one plump female and a male. only for a few days (hopefully)

place marbles in the bottom of the container so the eggs are safe.

one morning the female will drop and then your away ;)
