Just got my new stock home..

my cockatoo's.. need them sexed so I can make sure I get male and female preferably.

Now, I think i've got these two right; male ram;

And the girl, with the males already chosen cave in the background;

Whaddya guys think?? I'm dead chuffed!!!! Been waiting MONTHS to finish my tank, MONTHS..AGONY

The top two are both male Apisto. agassizii

The middle one is a Bolivian Ram, but the bottom looks like a Firemouth..

its a firemouth for sure, a young juvi. Bolivians are hard to sex unless you have a group, becasue they seem to show more in a group and you can distinguish male from female easier. I have 4 in my 29USG and I have 2 males to females, females just have the dot and little coloring compared to males. Your Bolivian looks female. Get the brightst Bolivian in the tank at LFS and good chance it will be a male.

Hmm, the one on the right could be female..

Really hard to take pics of the agassizi, they're very shy atm..

Ok.. firstly, is this Ram male or female? I've got it as male atm. It's slightly more yellow than it shows, flash washed it out.

Ok..

Then, Agassizi #1. Best i could get i'm afraid.

Agassizi #2.

you can use the zoom function and these will go full size, decent pics I hope.

It is difficult to tell, I'm edging slightly toward both male..

With the ram, it is difficult to tell as there are no others to compare to.

Maybe leave them to rest a bit? The ram is looking slightly stressed.

Ok, some more pics with and without flash.. think this is all of the same agassizi.

Will also take more photos in the morning for comparing.

starting to think this one is male, as it has a silverygrayish tint on its sides, as males seem to have. The other is pure yellow like the others females on google.

I've figured out they are Agassizi "yellow morph"

And for the male? ram. I read that the body shape from behind the pectoral fins is the key part of sexing, if it slopes up then it's a female, if it slopes down then it's male (apparently).. and this guy slopes down after his pectoral fins.

shameless bump, need this solved quickly as will be making a return trip to fish store morning - afternoon tomorrow.

A user on another forum reckons I have 2 male apisto's, but one is showing female colours as he is less dominant, but he also says he's no expert..
So.. I guess, I need more help, and here's looking at you.

finally found a diagram explaining this.. After a hard night trawling I finally caught the big one.

Both my apisto's are male.

In agassizi the dorsal fin and anal fins of a male, have a spear, or pointed extended tip to these fins. The female does not.

Sorted, will net up the less dominant male and take him back to the lfs and hope to pick out a female.

Also, taking back the firemouth and hoping to get a female ram xD

both apistos look male; it could be down to stress or a poor quality strain, to why their colors are dull. I am terrible at explaining but a female tail is a diff shape. Were they sold to you as cacautoides?

My avatar is a cacautoide <<<
