well i currently have four cherry barbs, 2 are light coloured and 2 are very dark orange sort of colours, would this reflect anyway on their sex,

reason i'm asking is the darker coloured barbs tend to actively chase the lighter coloured ones, not aggressively but if they cant get one they will go for the other etc

Thanks for your help

The darker orange ones are male. When it comes close to spawning they turn a rich velvet red color. If possible, get a few more females so the males won't harass the ones you have in your tank so much. For every male there should be 2 females.

Cherry barbs are one of the non shoaling species in the group. You don't say how big your tank is, but often, 2 males in a small tank will fight. Just a heads up.

Males are more colourful, reddish. Females are larger, deeper, and viewed from above wider. They tend to be more buff coloured with a darker stripe.
