You should be able to sex them when they reach about 1.5"-2" long.

I would say at 1.5 inch if not a little earlier, most male ancistrus have the beginnings of bristles by then

oh right,thanks.am i right in thinking if they have lots of bristles that means its a male.mine are about 1inch,a friend offered me 2 but i ended up with 10.thanks again

Females can develop bristles but they are usually small and very few of them. Males develop bushy bristles that are upturned.

With a bit of practise you can sex them earlier than that - look for the shape of the vent. V-shaped means male and U-shaped means female.

Best to observe this while they are sat against the glass.

its easy to sex them unless the female is wild then she will also have just as many bristles
