Right now I have 2 - 10 gal tanks. One tank is my main tank with about 7 fish in it, and the other is a quarantine tank. I would like to upgrade to a 20 gal or more. Do you think it would be o.k. to put my fish in the quarantine tank and then take everything out of my 10 gal and put it in the new 20 gal? Would this disturb my benificial bacteria? I don't want to go through another cycle. I would use most of the water from the 10 gal and put it in the 20 gal. Any advise would be apreciated.

Thanks

If you use as much material as you can from the other tank you should be OK , just add the fish a couple at a time over a few days [ to be safe ].

do you have any kits for testing the nitrogen cycle or at least for ammonia ?

The filter media is a big key here , maybe get a new one [ a filter ] for the 20 and let it run on your 10 with the one you already have for a few days or a week .

Depending on whether or not your quarantine tank has cycled , cut back on feeding while the fish are in it , also use an established filter in it .

It won't take long for a build up of dangerous levels of ammonia to appear , be prepared in case the fish end up in the quarantine tank longer then you originally thought ..

Good luck

I have test kits for nitRITE and ammonia. I'll will do a lot of testing to make sure everything is o.k. I'm a little confused on why you think I should maybe get another filter for the 20 gal. Right now I have an Aquaclear 200 on my main tank and an Aquaclear mini on the quaratine tank. I was going to use the 200 on the new 20 gal. My quarantine tank is almost cycled, but I'm in no rush to get the new tank. I'll make sure it's cycled. Thanks.

I think the new filter was suggested in case your current one isn't adequate enough for the 20 gallon or if ou want to keep the 10 gallon set up for some more fish. Then it would be possible to run both new and old filters in the old tank so that the new filter establishes a bacteria colony before you move it to the new 20 gallon. I'm not familiar with your filter so it may or may not be enough for your 20 gallon. None the less, more filtration is always better and I don't know whether you want to keep the old tank running and cycled in order to get more fish (I know I would :p ).

Just a suggestion , I thought since you where upgrading your tank size you may be getting another filter , and by letting the filter run on an established tank it would be full of benificial bacteria .

The filter you have should work fine

Thanks sylvia for picking me up

Now I understand what you meant. Thanks for the replies. The Aquaclear 200 is rated for a tank up to 50 gal, so I think it should be fine. I probably will keep the old tank running as a hospital and quarantine tank. My wife will kill me if I buy any more fish, but I probably will anyways. Thanks for everybodys help.

12 tanks! :hyper: How big are they? That must be a lot of work to maintain them all.

2 /55gal ,2/ 30 gal , 2 /20 long , 4 /10 gal and a couple of 5 gals .
and a reptile cage [ I should add most of this comes from yard sales ]
He's 13 , also a member here .

He does almost all the work himself , with the help of a Python no spill clean and fill, it keeps him busy and out of trouble .

I'm sure it doe's keep him busy. That's good that he doe's all the work himself. I keep hearing about this python. How doe's it work? Is it just for larger tanks?
