hi there..

im setting up an external filter...and altho i already have one set up on another tank,i dont think im getting optimal performance from it...it was bought second hand (as this new one)and i used the pipes included...when i cleane it out im still getting loads of crapy deposits left in bottom of tank under gravel...so my questions are this...

1...the filter IN pipe that syphons water from tank into filter..how far from gravel should this be??..
2...should the OUT pipe (clean water from filter) have a spray bar on or just let it drop into tank..3inches or so below water level??

any tips trix or advice are welcomed..

cheers anton

No matter what you do your still going to get deposits under the gravel when you clean the tank.

1. I have mine about 4 inches from the bottom, but i justput it in as far as it will go usually.

2. It depends. If you want a current in your tank then you just use the standard output, whereas if you dont want such a strong one, use the spray bar. It all depends on what your fish like/require.

with gravel substrate you can place the intake as far down as you like. where as you couldn't do that with sand.
As far as the return, the displacement of the spraybar will give you better circulation. I would suggest using it.

Personally, I'm partial to hardlining all my canisters (and HOB filters). It offers a much more rigin and stable product, and allows you to customize it to your needs. If you're handy with DIY stuff, I would suggest giving this a try.
