Set up for cories

Hi,

I'm thinking of setting up a tank for cories.
So I'm looking for advice on compatible fish for the mid and top layers.
I'd like to have live plants too, so that is a factor.
Any advice on filtration systems would be appreciated, I'll be using smooth sand on the tank bottom.

what size tank? how many cories are you planning on getting (so we know how much room for other fish )

Maybe a 500 litre.
I'd like a fair number of cory's but I don't have a fixed number in mind - quite flexible that way.
