I've spent the past two weeks trying to figure out what kind of parrot fish I have because I have two different kinds that are trying to breed. I'm pretty sure the female I have is a jellybean parrot because when we got her she was blue (at the time I didn't know anything about these fish or how they came to be that color). We've had her for about a year and a few weeks after we got her she turned back to her original color a sort of light orange/pink but definatley not white/pink. She is however a differnt shape than the other two parrots that we have. The other two are small and orange and their spines are significantly more curved than the female. I only realized that she is female because of the eggs that she layed today. I recognized the behavior as soon as they started moving the rocks a few weeks ago but only saw the eggs today. The female, her name is blue, won't stop fanning the eggs. I'm pretty sure that they aren't fertalized as they are clear and I read that the fertalized eggs look tan?

Ok, so here are my questions....what kind of parrots do I have? I've read conflicting stories and if I understand correctly my female is a jeallybean and my males are red blood parrots. I'm assume the males are infertile but I'm not sure that I've distinguished the difference. The males are very orange, smaller, with significantly curved spines. The female is much bigger, originally blue, longer spine, less curved spine, and a orange pink. Please let me know what you think I have.

Well firstly if you can get pics then that would solve the mystery. But there is really only one kind of blood parrot, it doesnt matter what colour its been dyed its still the same fish as an undyed one. Blood parrots usually have the deformed mouth and curved spine and are either pinkish/yellowish/oranginsh/reddish (undyed). They are largish cichlids that can reach 8"+ The other fish often called a jellybean parrot are short body/balloon pink convicts. Their proper (undyed) colour is white/light pink (the same as a pink convict) with some bluish tints to the fins. They are easily distinguished from blood parrots by their normal mouths, smaller eyes and they stay much smaller. Females like female pink convicts will get an orange/copper colouration to the belly at breeding time. The only resemblance to a blood parrot is the shape.
