I have never used it. But that should not matter since it is the ingredients in a med that make it what it is.

100 ml of Sera Baktopur contains:

acriflavine 209.7 mg- for external parasites and things like ich and velvet

methylene blue 4.95 mg- For Fungus on eggs, Ich, Saprolegnia and some bacteria (although generally not for use in bacterial infections other than as a bath/dip/quarantine therapy

phenylglycol 0.6 g- too long to explain, but it does have some antibiotic qualities

aqua purificata ad 100 ml- a fancy term for distilled water

So it looks to me like it might best be used for fungal, parasitic and protozoan problems but is probably not the first choice for many of the bacterial diseases. I am also used to antibiotics having to be administered in more than 2 doses over 3 days to be effective, In fact, in some cases with fish and stubborn cases of bacterial infection it is 10 days in a row.

But the worth of a med is based on the problem it can cure or eliminate. Moreover availability can be an issues. One may not have access to a better alternative.

What are you trying to treat?

I bought 9 harlequins from Petsmart, all of them they had and a couple of them had bad fins. I just got through the cycle and adds them on Friday. By last night I lost six of them. They had bad fins, then they get lethargic, then the lose color, then they can't swim, then they die. Along with them I bought 6 corys from there and 5 harlequins and 6 corys from Petco. Only the harlequins were showing any symptoms and all of them had clamped dorsal fins. No othe fish was showing that.

I started Melafix on Sunday and feeding high proteins. You had said that Melafix doesn't work wellto try a stronger antibiotic and this was the only in town I could find. I put it in today and it turned my water a bright green. It's been a couple hours and the fish don't seem to mind but it's really ugly.

I haven't lost a fish yet today and their fins are no longer clamped so they might be getting better.

Now you have me concerned when you states it turned the water bright green because here is an exact quote from the API site on the Melafix page:

MELAFIX, heals open wounds abrasions, treats fin and tail rot, eye cloud, mouth fungus and promotes re-growth of damaged fin rays & tissue. Will not adversely affect the biological filter, alter the pH, or discolor water.

Sorry I said that wrong. The Baktopur turned my water green, not the Melafix. The Baktopur is green in color and the effect is already quite diluted.
