How big is the tank?

its gonna be a Rio 180

at the moment my 6" senegal lives very happily with 3 gold lipped mackerel, 3 gold face angels, 2 Hoplo. catfish, a ram (she ate the other 3 when they were smaller) a plec and a weird brownish gourami type thing called a tac/tak - something.

the trick seems to be to get fish that are too big to eat and will grow to be just a bit too big for it. other than that mine is very peaceful and chilled out.

If you happen to look at the thread again, spikeyface, have you managed to find out what they actually are? The best I could find were coppernose barbs, but the 'gold lipped mackerel' i've seen look nothing like them -_-.

Tankmates generally involve anything they can't eat

i cant find much on the net - bought them at Arundel, they have one or two stil there. will see what thier latin name is and post a pic too if i can get one

according the not-so-LFS i hope to buy them from, they had been kept in a tank with blood parrots, one had grabbed the parrot by teh head and thrashed around with it till teh head came off

they are only juvies too....

checkout my profile and look at my 82G tank
you will see what I have my P.Palmas palmas
(I know that is not a senagal) with,
that may give you some ideas.

thanks, but they're all scientific names :S

Tis pretty much some larger loach species, some larger danio species, and some other things that I can't be bothered to look up. As has already been said, it's up to you, as lnog as they can't be eaten.

I kind of did a biotope for a while with a senegal, 3 jewel cichlids, and 2 syno. eupterus in my 60 gallon. I was understocked. But everyone seemed happy. Make sure you get super tight fitting lid. Being that senegals are air-breathers and jumpers you could have a mistake like mine. In that i'm still out looking for a replacement 7 inch polypterus senegalus.

i got a rio 180 :)
i have 2 albino snegalus bichir, they are very friendly to eachover, maybea pair ?
also a polypeterus delhezi ( armored bichir )
they get on VERY well
also with them a baby snake head.
3 50p sized silver dollars.
a small cichlid.
and awaiting a knife.
they are all very compatable and make a very nice tank.
hope this helps.
fro mwhat i have found fdro mmy bichirs, is that they have very distinct characters and are very friendly, you get funner behaviour from more than one of them :)

I keep a marbled bichir, and he lives happily with a couple of silver dollars. not sure the same would be with a senegal bichir though. knifefish (saying they are about the same size ) usually live pretty well together with bichirs, as long as you don't have something super aggressive on your hands (never had one, but clown knives are a definente NO, just for an ex.. I just figured ou how big they get!!). Bichirs are not aggresive fish at all, just be sure you get them tankmates with the same "personality" :p
