Senegal Set-up Advise

hi,

new tank should be up and running by the weekend, approx 55gallon 48x18x18.

have decided i want 2 senegal bichir, tank will have play sand as subtrate,what else would you recomend
for the tank to keep them happy caves bogwood etc

strong or subdued lighting?

also couple of tank mates prefer oddballs or c.american cichlids

a nicely cycled tank would be a great start

Heres a cpl ideas
TANK:
The tank should be furnished with wood for hiding places, and fine gravel or sand for a substrate.
The lighting should be muted, and the water should have a slight current.
PLANTS:
Bolbitis heudelotii , Anubias, Vallisneria, Eleocharis.
FISH:
African tetras, Mormyrids,African Knifefish, African Butterfly fish,
Synodontis, Hemichromis, Pelvicachromis,
OR
The tank should have fine gravel, sand, or clay for a substrate.
Dense vegetation and floating plants help recreate the natural setting.
Use submerged wood to provide hiding places.
The lighting should be bright and the water should be clear.
PLANTS:
Bolbitis heudelotii, Ammannia, Marsilea, Eleocharis, Anubias, Nymphaea, Water
Lettuce
*FISH:
Mormyrids, African tetras, barbs, spiny eels, Haplochromines, Tilapia, Hemichromis, Synodontis, -Anne

gonna use the fluval 305 with mature media which is currently running as a 2nd filter on my rio 180 so no problems there.

use low lighting, my senegal's tank has NO light and he's quite happy!

i have my in a set up without plants with lots of blogwood and water full of tanins. keeping them with fishes too large to eat or able to defend themselves (eg. raphael cats) would be okay
