I recently just got a senegal bichir. Its really small (2" max) and it eats flake food off the bottom of the tank. I've looked around for info on this, but everywhere I see info, it doesn't mention flake foods in the diet. The tank is a small cichlid tank so high quality cihlid flakes are being fed. My question is, is it hard ot get them to eat flake foods and am I jsut lucky, or has my research eluded the real answers to my questions? Thanks in advanced.

they will really eat anything u give them but they do prefere the meaty foods but depends what cichlids u have non of a food like that may ever get to him! maybe try bloodworms and shrimp see what happens and let us know :good:

It is unusual but not unheard of for small bichirs to eat flake food. For best growth and health you should try feeding your bichir a varied diet which could include frozen foods like bloodworms, beef heart (in moderation), krill of appropriate size, etc. Many bichirs will also take prepared pellet foods. The one I use the most is Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets, which I break into smaller pieces for the smaller bichirs.

all, except P.weeksi, of my bichirs will eat flakes if it lands on their nose.
they do prefer meaty foods and love hikari sinking pellets.

My weeksi and laperadi also seem to love algae wafers :S

for a bichir of your size,i would feed it

bloodworm a few times a week

sinking carnivore pellets as the staple diet.break them in to smaller pieces

try feeding bite size pieces of lance fish/any other fish.

dont stick to one food all the time as your senegal will get fussy and only eat that food.keep the diet varied.

My bichir gets plenty of food off the bottom, the tank is very lightly stocked so theres tiem for the bichir to get the food. He's very active all times of the day. He's getting flake food and frozen bloodworms now. And sining pellets are on the list of things to do. But I was jsut wondering if other saw this and since its not unheard of, then its a behavior to expect. I'd rather get him on a food that when I'm away my sister will want to touch. This way it'll be easier for her to feed them. Thanks for the info!
