I currently have a 60 gallon planted tank, and my fish right now are a couple angels, a couple rams, a synodontis eupterus, a striped raphael catfish, and that is it, so my smallest fish will be the rams at 3 inches. Will a senegal be ok in this tank or no? also... what can you tell me about them, theior behavior, experiences, feeding, etc. Places i read online said they dont eat live, and some do, so i was wondering from you guys what you know about them, thanks!

the rams might be a bit to small to keep a bichir with

Polypterids are generaly oppurtunistic non agressive predators if they think they can eat it and they are hungry they'll try.Their hungry a lot too.
A P.senegalus is a great first bichir very active with lights on,mine are very inquisative, not the most colorful of the family but they have personality.
P.senegalus should reach 10-12''and can live 15 years +
Feeding
Live foods : guppies , rosey red minnows, ghost shrimp, earthworms
frozen: bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp , krill, squid and frozen silversides
some will take pellets, lean meaty foods such as beefheart are good too
but you need to balance their diet for nutrition so vary the diet, not just one
thing. How much to feed them ? Feed them until their belly bows slightly.
and skipping a meal will not hurt themonce they are
past 7-8 inches remember in the wild food is not
always available.A nice round bichir is a happy bichir -Anne

If you want to keep the rams alive, I strongly recommend not putting a sengal in there, they will be snack size.

ok senegal returns tot he store, i never put him in, he was ina breeding net so he lived, but not in the whole tank untill i knew (chasing him out would not be fun!)

You shouldnt really have brought it until you know it would be ok.

Sorry you returned it,they are truly amazing fish having survived the breakup of a massive supercontinent, outlived the dinosaurs, survived the ice ages.Posessing a combination primitive fish features and modren fish features they are a study in evolution-Anne

you should be fine keeping bichir with most fish.

I have 3 bichir, a senegal, albino, and ornate. I have them in a tank with...

1. Elephant nose
2. Peacock Eeel
3. Discus
4. Gourami
5. Moray Eel
6. African Butterfly
7. Clown Knife
8. Upside Down Cat
9. Green Spotted Puffer
10. Mono Fish
11. Needle Nose
12. Tiger Salamanders
13. Newts
14. Frogs
15. Crabs
16. Crawfish

And yes I know I have freshwater fish mixed with brackish, don't bother commenting on that ;p As my pet lady says, I am more daring then most with aquarium setups.

All get along fine. The Bichirs are very peaceful. They only go after the feeder fish when I put feeders in. Any fish larger than a goldfish they don't even look at. They love feeders but also love frozen brine shrimp and other frozen foods such as sprimp.

how daring you are is another issue all together. that stocking list would be flamed really, with more reasons than you can imagine
