Anyone here self-built a house? If so, what is the most important thing you learned from the experience?
I’m trying to find a plan I like currently, have a list of rooms I’d like in the house and know what material I’d like to build in but can’t figure out how to put the rooms together currently. do no like square boxes.

Wow... That's an amazing idea.
By "self build" I thought you meant like an aquarium or something not a house! 😅.

Best of luck on your endeavors!

Work out how much it is going to cost and it will be double that.
Work out how much time it should take and it will take double that.

Don't make changes part way through the build because that adds a lot more to the final price.

Unless your an architect or builder, get someone else to do it because it's a lot less stressful.

If you want to do it yourself, do some courses on building, carpentry, plumbing, etc. At least them you will be able to do most of it.

You can get an architect to draw plans for what you want. You go in with a list of what you want, a map showing the building site with north on it. You say i want 6 rooms this big. I want this, I want that, I want it all. You go away and the architect calls you a week later saying it will cost x dollars. You rob a bank so you can go to jail and not have to pay the architect.

Unless you have friends in the building game and a friend who is an architect, or you have some experience in those areas, leave it to the professionals. Unless you like stress and learning on the job, then go for it.

I’ve no intention of doing it myself and will probably look for a project managed build. We’ve gutted a couple of houses, back to the bones, and that was stressful enough. Plasterer and electrician fell out and it took months before we got it fixed, they wouldn’t even be in the same house never mind room as each other. Blardy men children. Lol
