saw some elegans corys today was so tempted to get some there was also pandas bandits schwartzi venezuela & some with a gold stripe on then but can't remember what they were called.
hoping some of them will still be there when my tanks cycle now.
so my question is now are corys ok in a 40cm deep tank ???
oh i do hope so or i'm gona have to get a another tank for them :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

wow 27 people have looked & noone seems to know :/
without sounding like a moaning person the idea of this forum is to get advice so that people don't make mistakes or impulse buy fish that are unsuitable for their tanks, now me being me & i have not run out & got the cories that i want just incase but what if it had been some1 who doesn't really worry about getting it right ???
they may think the lack of response means they can go & get them, then end up with a load of very unsuitable fish in their tanks & end up with loads of problems.
sorry for the moan but i've asked advice & been totally ignored :X :/ -_- :(

Cant say i've heard of elegan corys, but i aint a cory expert, i have 3 (2 pandas, and 1 peppered). My tank is 50cm deep and they do fine, and i'm sure any cory would do fine with 40cm deep too.
Can you find any pics of them, would be nice to see them, as i cant find any on google image search.

How many gallons is the tank? The Elegans Cory Cat is a great looking cory. They need to be in schools of at least 4, but 6 is better. I would say at least a 30 US gallon tank as these cories, like all other cories, like to swim. They also need a smooth sand or very smooth gravel substrate because their barbels are easily damaged. Make sure they have plenty of hiding places because they like to hide from the light at times. They are a great fish, I wish I could find some locally.

Hope this helps

You weren't being ignored; you don't always get instant replies on a forum, it depends who's on when. It's not like replying to requests for advice is anyone's job or they get paid for it!
Anyway re: the tank depth, I'd say 40cm (16") would be fine - if they are very small when you buy them you could always lower the water level for a while.

thanks for the replies guys  :D
anyway the tank is 55 uk gallons so knew it was plenty big enough but was sure i'd read somewhere that some corys don't like deep tanks as i know they like to swim to the top for air. already have albinos but they in a smaller tank.
been back to shop today & the other 1 i saw was this 1:
http://www.corycats.com/corydoras_agassizii_htm.htm
hoping & praying they are still in when my tanks are ready althou he does get stuff in regular.

just remembered another 1 i saw but they had it listed as a puru gold stripe cory but i can't find this on corycats.com so not sure if its labeled wrong althou it was stunning looking, maybe some 1 else knows what its called

Hi trace1 :)

The C. elegans, along with C. concolor, are tops on my want list these days! They are lovely fish and you are lucky to have a chance to buy them.

As for the Peru gold stripe, there seems to be a little confusion with the names lately. If it looks like a bronze cory in color, with a faint white stripe along the top, it is a Gold Shoulder:

There is also a fish that is refereed to as a Peru gold line cory, or gold laser:

They are both, along with orange, green and red lasers, members of the C. aeneus species. None of these are common and if you want them, try to get them soon or your chance might have passed you by.
:D

So the Peru gold stripe is a variation of the C. aeneus species correct? Im just trying to make sure I didnt give the wrong info. I didnt know there were so many variations of the C. aeneus species

Hi Barracuda518 :)

You are right. There are some people who feel that some of them should be reclassified though. Until that happens, however, they are still all considered C. aeneus variations. :D

hi inchworm
thanks for that, do you think if i do extra water changes like daily they would be ok in my 13 gallon for a week or 2 as the other tanks are still cycling & the 28 gallon has been sold :-(
but sure he didn't have many of them left

Hi trace1 :)

As long as you keep the ammonia and nitrites at zero, they will be fine.

oh cool will go get some 2moro now, i've also got another little filter i can run in there as well so will do that.
mite even price up another tank so i can have a cory tank going but a bigger 1 so i can fit a couple of different 1s in lol
