In my shop we sell Sea Monkeys

I believe they are brine shrimp which you hatch and feed in this little house thing - theyre guaranteed to live 2 years. Now, what does everyone think about them? They retail at between £7 and £15

Im thinking about getting one for my little cousin's sixth birthday, but are they cruel? Im sure she would look after them - shes growing a bean at school and shes always talking about it!

I don't know luch about them but perhaps if you don't think they are in a big enough space why not get something better?

For that price, I personally would go for something more er... 'substancial'.

:)

Edit: Ooops, just read she's going to be 6. In that case she should be fine and they will make a nice present.

Sea monkeys are pretty kool, but keep in mind they don't really look like much! (get a home for them that does) They will make a fine pet for a six year old, I think she will be thrilled! Better to start her on sea monkeys (brine shrimp) then a "nemo" hahaha! :D

Im not sure how happy my aunt would be about this so I will ask her! I dont think she will want fish in the house - she is a single parent so i thought the sea monkeys could be ok for my cousin to look after on her own. dead brine shrimps arent as much of a problem as a dead goldfish! IMO anyway. Not that I expect them to die, anyway!

sea monkeys are just brine shrimp. they don't get big. they stay quite tiny actaully. as for the 2 year guarantee, maybe if an adult was keeping them, had a air stone, etc (like when you raise them as food), they might live longer, but when i was a kid, they usually lasted a few months (but then, thats about how long most little kids' interest would last anyway....... better than gettinga big tank set up and having him lose interest and stick the parents with the care.......). for a six year old, great starter. better than a goldfish in a bowl.
they are kind of neat to watch "hatch" and grow and swim about though....... fun for a six year old

When I was about 7 my dad bought me some sea monkeys. It came with a tiny little plastic cylander, a magnafying glass, and the monkeys.

On the box they had pictures of little monkeys with tails wearing crowns like the king and queen of sea monkey world. I was sooo excited and my dad took me to 7-11 to get the good water.

When they finally hatched I was like "oh... specks  " They were just little dots and I was hoping to actually see little monkeys in the water  . I was very disapointed.

Hopefully your cousin likes them more than I did

I bought those back when I was little. They took a couple of days to hatch, and lived a pretty long time. They died one weekend when I went on vacation.
My set came with the eggs, and a plastic dish that was about 6 inches by 4 inches and 1 inch deep. I placed mud in there and water, then sprinkled the eggs. I'm not sure if what I had was brine shrimp (not certain what those look like). My little pets were very hardy and grew about an inch long and looked EXACTLY like miniature horse shoe crabs. I had about 5 or 6 that thrived in there and they were so neat to watch burrow in the mud.

I remember the box said stuff about "living dinosaurs" and that these tiny creatures existed millions of years ago. I think I might buy more someday.

I ordered mine from the back of a Spiderman comic book. I thought the ad said you could train them to do tricks.

I thought mine would be happier in a large bowl with a tadpole.
I was wrong. :byebye:

BTW, there's a great South Park episode with them, except they were called "Sea Men".

LMAO@ sea men, I remember that one

"The sea people and meeeee"

Plecoperson, they're not fish by any means and they require very little care, they'd make a fantastic gift  I had some when I was little and they were great.Although they never played ball like the box said they would

CatLover, I think that what you had might have been 'Triops'. I had both when I was younger - sea monkeys were OK, but Triops were much bigger, and more fun to watch. Also, they have three eyes (hence the name), which you can actually see properly!

plecoperson, if you can get Triops, I would definitely recommend them, I have seen them around occaisionally, but I'm not sure where you'd be able to find them.

Dave

As a gift for a small kid, sure, get em.

But if your concerned with "paying for what you get", check a LFS. Mine sells brine shrimp for $1 a bag, and trust me, you get THOUSANDS.

Not sure about every other LFS, but most have them like this.

When I was younger I had sea monkeys. I got the food, eggs, and the water purifier and of course the container and light for like 14$. They were neat to watch but the only problem was that I had to add more water and that always killed them.

i remember that episode! and they made a city! lol
anyway i was talking about sea monkeys the other day with a friend at school and she goes "Are sea monkeys real?" and i'm like "Er yes they are real dumbass!" and then she goes "But they come in a packet." yes she is quite blonde.
wasnt that a great story! yes it was :kana:

I got some sea monkeys for my birthday last year (yes, for my 20th birthday.... :p) I had never had any when I was a kid so I decided to make up for my 'lost childhood'. I got the plastic tank shaped like a submarine and if you pressed buttons a light came on inside and it made submarine noises. They were quite exciting although I couldnt see them for a few days after they hatched because they were so tiny, I wasnt sure if anything had actually happened.

Unfortunately my sea monkeys soon turned into sea corpses, I guess they didnt like living in my submarine
