I have always wanted to have some sea horses in a tank :) They just look so cool!

Any advice on looking afterthem / what size tank/ breeding/ can they be kept with others.

Much appreciated ;)

William. I have never kept or seen them. I have thought about looking into it though. I believe you need a dedicated tank for them, and there is something fussy about feeding them if I recall.

Seahorses can be kept in a reef tank provided you have plants. SH’s are for the advanced reefer – your tank should be a couple years old with no issues. You also must plan for this later addition – they can’t be in an overly aggressive tank, ie…..a Naso or Yellow Tang and the SH’s would be gonners.

SH’s also require a separate tank be set up to grow micro (or macro – can never recall) algae. Its like a refuge tank, real slow moving water so the algae can grow – that slow running algae riddled water will dump particles into your tank that you can’t see but the SH’s need. As for food – SH’s aren’t too bad since they will eat brine shrimp. I feed everything but my shark brine shrimp, the shark eats squid I buy at my local fish market. Some day I plan on a SH or two – right now I am more focused on raising corals.

Thanks, going to read the article, but I don't think I am going to keep seahorses ;) They need a species tank apparently and several other complications...

William. I seem to have read somewhere tha sea horses are not recommended for beginers. so you may have made the right choice. But I agree with Mr Ghost I don't think there is any ease when it comes to sea horses as well you need to have everything right or you loose the lot. That maybe the reason why I never had any in the past, but with the advancment of all the new stuff that becomes available it is certanly a lot easier mainting the correct conditions these days. ( still a lot of work though)

These are NOT an easy species to keep

Nikki my fiance was once told by an unscrupolous lfs that they were a doddle to keep and all but got some be it not for my advice against the idea :what:

They are an expert marine keeper only fish in my opinion

Doddle!  I really get a laugh out of you guys "over there".
Your infecting me. Called a guy a w#*^%r the other day and got a really funny look from Mrs Great Lakes..

I had to change some language. please check your posts as the language thingy doesn't pick up on some words.

What did he do ?

as stated above seahorses is an endeavour all on its own!they have very specific requirments, and should only be attempted by very experienced saltwater keepers, they are incredibly docile creatures, and will opt to starve to death, rather than compete with another fish for food,so tank mates are very limited, and should realy be avoided, with the odd exeptions like blenny or goby for companions, they are also very picky eaters, generally they will only accept live food,on top of all that they are required to be fed 3-6 times daily!which is a major commitment on its own, they are magnificent little creatures, but they are delicate and very complicated,

v easy

I agree that Sea horses belong in a species tank.
When kept with other fish they often starve as they are too slow to compete for food, and subsequently need to be hand fed in these situations.
