I read somewhere that sea shells are somehow dangerous to use because they emitt something dangerous to the fish--would this be true in a betta bowl?

I don't know how reliable my story is, but I had a seashell in my betta vase (don't worry, it was a big one and I fed and cleaned him regularly...there wasn't a plant on top either) for a long time...over a year. He was fine. He was always healthy and happy and fiesty. (then there was a terribly no declor accident :-( ) But I also read not to use sea shells.

I wouldn't. The shells erode very quickly and cause the pH to rise. I think they caused Hannibal to be very lethargic until I removed them.

Too bad! But thanks for the info! Maybe I can find some imitation shells.
